No you don't. You are covered 3rd party already via RM.

You don't need to tell your own insurer, to answer the question.

Private vehicles must only be used to drive to and from the delivery office to the first point of delivery and if the car needs to be moved along the delivery route.
No-one else should be travelling in the private vehicle while the colleague is on duty.

If the colleague’s personal car insurance provider is a member of the Association of British Insurers’ (which can be checked online), then no further action is required by the colleague with respect to insurance.

If it is not, the colleague must call their insurer and confirm how the vehicle will be used, otherwise their policy may be invalidated. They do not need to extend cover to business use...

I would advise in all cases contact your insurance company and let them know the situation. They'll probably try to sell you business insurance but you don't need it anyway.

If an insurance company can find a way to screw you over they will and one of their favourite ways is if you don't tell them about change of use/keeper/wheel trims.

The danger here is RM are only providing 3rd party. If you had a bump on your way to delivery RM would pay
for damage to the other party but not yours!
Even if it was the third parties fault, you try and claim off your insurance and your insurance company
says 'You were doing what!?? No you didn't tell us. We're not helping you, you've not got business insurance, do one sunshine!'

It might be buried in the ABI regulations that you might not need it, but imagine the prolonged admin nightmare trying to
sort it out with your vehicle off the road.

Adding business insurance doesn't cost much if anything (mine was added for free).

If it's "3rd party" only insurance then there's no cover for your own vehicle damage should the driver be unfortunate enough to be involved in an accident etc?

I'm not sure of the ABI have updated their website recently but it now states you should contact your insurer if you need to use your car to travel to work etc

"If I choose to drive to work now instead of getting public transport, will my car insurance still be valid?

If your motor insurance policy does not include cover for commuting, and you’re using your own vehicle to travel to work, you will need to contact your insurer"

Also if you don't have Business insurance you can't claim for mileage, (well you shouldn't be able to do)

I personally would not use my car but if you are i would definitely have Buss Ins to cover my car if anything happened.

Strictly speaking, that depends how far RM go in helping their staff in contesting fault. The fault parties insurance should pay out as appropriate, but any fight "depends".

If it's not deemed RM staffs fault then the other drivers insurance should pay for RM staffers repairs, though if it is the RM staffers fault that staffer pays from their own pocket. Real life is not so simple though, and any contesting of fault may see a completely different circumstance occur (depends how far RM will go in contesting and ultimately, who is determined to be at fault).

Assuming the other party has valid insurance or isn't under the influence or even stops or you're actually around when it happens.

It's a huge risk people are taking with their vehicles especially if you haven't even paid for it yet. Some people are using nearly brand new vehicles still loaded with finance...absolutely crazy in my opinion.

That is a fair point.

I'm just stating that 3rd party doesn't automatically mean a staffer footing the bill for repairs in an accident where they aren't deemed to be at fault: it should work like regular third party insurance. There would be more inconvenience (like third party insurance), but the post I was responding to was complete rubbish as any claim would depend on the circumstances involved (and how far RM as an underwriter want to fight for you).

I don't use my vehicle to go on delivery either. I'll drive a works van, walk, or get a bus.

Why are use your car anyway?? My partners starter motor has gone also he has had to replace his battery and now he needs to replace part of his exhaust, and the Royal Mail won’t pay for a penny of this understandably and all he’s done is end up paying more money out of his own pocket and got less overtime what is the point

Not complete rubbish - usually it's your insurance company or any legal company that they delegate your case
to that is supposed to 'fight' for your no fault claim - however if you've neglected to tell them that you're using
your vehicle for business use they might consider it less than a 100% chance of 'winning' and wouldn't want to
take the case forward.

Furthermore as RM are only providing 3rd party insurance why would their underwriter be fighting for recompense
for damage to your vehicle as you've mentioned? They're not insuring damage to your car, they're insuring
any damage that you may have caused to someone else.

If it's not your fault, yes the at fault party should pay up but if their insurance company research the circumstances of your
and RM's insurance and find out you don't have business insurance I'd bet they'd try to suggest you legally weren't insured for
that particular element of the journey.

It's just too much of a risk, why do it?

It is your insurance company that fight your case, but they aren't fighting to get your vehicle repaired: they're fighting to avoid themselves paying out to anyone (so long as they see the circumstances allowing them to fight). In the same way RM would theoretically fight to the same end as they act as the insurance company in the case of the third party cover while on delivery (without business insurance your regular company probably wouldn't knowingly cover you, and with business insurance you don't need RMs cover).

In the case of RM covering third party, then it works the same as any other third party insurance (which you can purchase for yourself from insurance companies). Lots of vehicles on the road are covered third party, so it's no use comparing RMs third party with someone fully comp because they obviously have different terms (none of which mean RM automatically capitulating no matter the circumstances).

If RM (or any other underwriter) are successful in fighting against them paying out (by successfully arguing the full fault lies with another involved party) then it is that fault parties insurance that pays for appropriate recompense (assuming they are insured). If they aren't successful then they will only pay out for third parties (not a staffers car), but this is reliant on fault being given to the staffer (which you earlier insinuated was inevitable no matter the circumstances, and is the bit I wanted to correct). If the other parties insurance discover you were covered 3rd party via RM then they know the staffer was insured: the cover coming from a different underwriter due to the circumstances is irrelevant as cover is still in place (RM themselves could get in a lot of bother if the cover they offer is legally non-existant).

It's a crap enough deal for those using ther own vehicle to start with. There's no need for alarmist posts about it.

Exactly, at least we agree on that, people should be alarmed that everything would
be hunky dory if they were involved in a bump irrespective of whose fault it was.

I've seen the prolonged dramas that a couple of colleagues have had with RM insurance in no fault incidents
over the past couple of years, even with a minor incident such as a broken wing mirror. Managers become conspicuous
by their absence and/or don't believe you and you have to spend your own time and effort proving your innocence.

I wouldn't trust my vehicle to RM's vehicle servicing offer they pushed a couple of years ago,
I wouldn't trust them with their insurance offer either!
