Job unavailable because im fit to complete a duty

Post by centenaryman »

Hi...ive never come across this before but im trying to go from postal to mail centre.
There are vacancies there that is fact...but on enquiring im told " im sorry you are fit to complete a walk and these vacancies are only for staff that are unable to complete a walk"

Now ive seen over the years that discrimination can come in to play and surely this is discrimination again able bodied or am i being stupid.

Ive seen my local rep who is decent but he seems to have hit a brick wall.....

Any advise would be gratefully received
Thanks

Probably because the duty is not advertised as vacant ?

However ,the person was wrong to discriminate and they should of replied it’s not vacant or as been reserved for existing employees with health issues.

If the duty is advertised then that would be pure discrimination and I would take it further ,speaking ,writing to the more senior management .

Turn it around. Imagine you were unable to do a walk due to health issues. The only options left were redeployment to mail centre, or IHR. But you cannot get redeployment to mail centre due to all vacancies being filled by those who are able to do a walk?

Sounds that they haven't been advertised as vacant, but being kept reserved for people who no longer able to do walks, rather than paying them off, which is cheaper for RM

Does the mail centre have a collection hub? You may be able to transfer to that as I've known it happen in the past.

I don't think it's that they don't want to pay out. I and four others in my office have recently taken IHR and had no problems. There is however probably quite a few people who can't afford to lose a job and would jump at the opportunity to keep working rather than take a years wage, especially if they've still got a long while before retirement age. It makes more sense to ring fence these jobs for people who can comfortably do a day in a mail centre but not a days walking in a DO.

We've encountered this problem as well. A "Fit" Postmen wanted to transfer to the Local Mail Centre. He was unable to because there was already a waiting list of "Unfit" Postmen (mainly LongTerm Knee, Hip & Back Problems) waiting for a vacany.

TBH I can see the Logic of the Argument. :cuppa

True, but I don't think the OP is looking for an easier role unless I've missed an earlier post by them.

The job isn't unavailable because you're fit to complete a duty, the job is unavailable because others aren't.

Not to be too harsh but you're irrelevant in the scenario unless at some point in the future you find yourself in the unfortunate position of not being fit to complete a duty.

The "unfit" ones probably do flats and manual letters duties. These days there's way less need for flats and manual letters duties, sometimes you can get away with just one person on flats and one person on manual letters for a good chunk of a shift

Reading between the lines in my opinion he is looking for an easier role. as most posties will say working in mc is easier than doing a walk. although some hard enough duties in mc's.

It's not that it's an easier role, it's that it's a different role. One that doesn't involve 10 miles a day up and down steps in the pissing rain.

There isn't any role in a mailcentre that's as physically demanding on your body as delivery, claiming that there is would be ridiculous. There may be jobs just as tiring but that's not the same thing.
