PDA scanning/GPS

Post by HTPostman »

I’ve asked a manager this but didn’t get a straightforward answer, now there’s a surprise....

We’ve had a big push to scan on the doorstep and not down the road or from the van as there have been lots of denial of receipt claims and when tracking shows it being delivered 100 yards away it’s hard to disprove it.

My question is this; You scan a parcel for Mr Bloggs at 1 King Street. He’s not in so you fill out the P739 and post it through. Half an hour later you’re a few streets along on Queen Street, Mr Bloggs has come out looking for you, he’s just got back and has the P739 in his hand.

What are we meant to do in this situation? If I hand it over in exchange for the P739 the GPS will show it being scanned on Queen Street, not his address. I don’t have time to go all the way back to his house just to get the GPS location right. Am I meant to refuse to give it to him?
The day is gonna come when we’re all gonna have to testify.

That would be a rare occurance and the customer should remember if they have chased the postie down the street. Whereas forgetting to press the submit button until further down the road is a much more common mistake for us to do.

My old van share partner would say sorry that would have been the packet driver and I don’t have it onboard, if they have the 739 (and it’s not a special) I would just give them the parcel but then again I doubt that’s RM policy.

Official answer from a letter in the old Courier, Oct 2015 in response to a question about redelivering an SD after the first pre-1pm attempt,
but the rule is still valid for any item I would assume::
Tim Stratton, quality and customer manager, replies:
Thanks Brian – this is a valid point. Our policy states that colleagues are not permitted
to give mail to people in the street. The only incidence where they should hand over an item
once a ‘Something for you’ card has been delivered, is if the customer opens the door while
they are still on the customer’s property, ensuring they retrieve the ‘Something for you’ card.

Correct procedure is not to give items over to anyone in the street away from the address in question.
I get this situation a few times every week.
I just tell them not authorised to hand it over away from their address and that the PDA logs the gps location of the scan and if it is not at the correct address it could lead to problems later if there are any issues.
I usually say i'll try and pop back with it later if I have time though.

Does anyone know - when the GPS point is taken? Is it when you scan the barcode, or when you press confirm delivery? cheers

I don't know who all these liars are denying receipt, how would they know where we've scanned it ? We don't provide this information as far as i know.

If you track a parcel on the RM website it shows you on a map where it was delivered and shows the GPS coordinates.

In the vast majority of cases they don't.
It's usually just a basic denial of receipt.
The business just wants us to tighten up on where we scan so that they can use the data to deny the denial.

What happens when your PDA stops working in the rain or the battery's dead?

You aint going to be scanning the parcels on the doorstep then are you?

Do what you’re meant to in that situation, fill in an epod card and hand it in to the locker.
