letterboxes on bottom of doors

Post by postiepete2 »

seems like every other few weeks some idiot gets a new door with letterbox right on the bottom of the door
these new black wooden doors with tough metal boxes - someones going do their back in someday
1 can you refuse to deliver on safety grounds?
2 can RM sack you for this?
3 are these people ignorant? we`re the ones bending down to put mail through every day
4 do these companies putting the doors on ask the people where they want the letterbox or do they deliberately put them on the bottom?
5 who do you sue when you do your back in? - RM - the company that put the door on - everyone whos got a LB on bottom of door?
6 we should start a national campaign and refuse to deliver to LB right on the bottom of doors

If I remember rightly our government were going to ban this style but that was before Brexit and pandemic looks like its been dropped for the moment,it was only on new builds though,I think people just go out and buy one.

It's going to be a long time before it happens. Between Brexit and the pandemic, there's a ton of legislation that'll have higher priority for parliamentary time. Has parliament even got through a quarter of all the legislation linked to Brexit yet?

I cringe every time I see a new door being fitted, there's a particular model installed where I deliver where it's almost impossible to push letters through, and the edges are really sharp.

You can get into trouble, so yes. There's an advisory from Royal Mail on how to deliver mail into low-level letter slots. The advice is to remove your pouch off your shoulder (if you're carrying one) and place it on the ground. Then get down and deliver the letters before collecting your pouch and slinging it back over your shoulder. A nuisance for sure, but better than being one of the approximately 16,800 back-related absences Royal Mail experience over a given year.

Check this thread out: Ban low level letterboxes!!

And it might be a good idea to contact Vicky Ford, who was the Conservative MP who advocated a ban on low-level letter boxes. Ask her for any update on any upcoming building regulations approvals.

The worst ones are the ones that are not only low down but you cant lift without using your fingernail as theres no gap to get your finger under
If you tolerate this, then your paid break will be next

Theres new ones appearing on my route, curved flap inside and out with a lip, so any mail just concertinas, even bulky magazines get caught on the lip.
Obviously whoever designs these things never actually tests them beyond looking pretty.

I delivered to a road on a newly built estate last week where every house had a letter box on the bottom of the door, what developer would think that made any sense, I feel sorry for the postie who normally has to deliver their post.

The legislation on low level letterboxes will eventually get passed into law although likely not retrospectively. It as well as nearly everything else has been held up by Brexit & now by Brexit and Covid for years now. They appear to be on continuous damage control so very little of what we pay them to do as a nation is actually being completed.
The views I express here are mine alone and do not represent the views of Royal Mail Group.

That's my approach too, as long as the outer flap is shut with nothing sticking out, that'll do for me. Just waiting for one particular one on my delivery to complain, I've got my speech ready lol. Any normal height box, mail goes all way through, but not the ones on the floor.

Shouldn't have a pouch on your shoulder. That's what a lwt is for.

I Wrote-During Covid-Which is still relevant now
It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
My BFF Clash
The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
