Ring Doorbell Audio
Ok I get it.People can film their property. My question is are they allowed audio of You.It seems the rage to record the Postie and get cash from the Sun Newspaper but surely they don’t have any right to Your voice?

I don't know what about these dispatches programmes that has in the past featured the worst of us? You can hear quite clearly what is said but they obscure their faces
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

It seems that these things are never actually used for their primary purpose - either as a doorbell, or a remote way of speaking to the property owner when they aren't in.
I must have pressed a ring doorbell hundreds of times, and the one and only time that I've had a voice reply, they asked me to leave it on the doorstep, to which I refused.

Re: Ring Doorbell Audio
It used to be said you can't record someone without their permission but with modern technology this seems to have fallen by the way side.
It seems, in law, that a property owner can record what they like on their own property.
It would then be a case of your choice not to go on it if you're not happy with it. Obviously you don't have a choice as you're working but that doesn't affect their right to record.

It depends on the circumstances - if you are in public carrying out public duties then there is no implied right to privacy. But members of the public may indeed have a right to privacy, however, it is very contextual and there is no catch-all law that covers all situations.
They can, within certain limitations but there are certain laws around CCTV (which applies to Ring Bells) these range from Data Protection, GDPR and specific laws around having signs informing people that they may be under surveillance.
But you do have rights under privacy laws, GDPR and data protection, which with this postie, may have been breached, but I am not a lawyer.
Its a long piece but anyone really interested I this sphere of the law could read this article https://www.lawteacher.net/free-law-ess ... -essay.php

Re: Ring Doorbell Audio
I was referring to recording of voice as the poster had mentioned. Obviously CCTV and police etc video and record voice in public. You don't have to be performing public duties - the law applies to everyone so anyone can do so in public.
The issue is public vs private. Public land = anyone can record as there is no expectation of privacy as long as you don't point into a private window/garden. You have a right to privacy in your own home/garden or anywhere where there is a reasonable expectation of privacy.
On private land, it is up to the owner.
If CCTV is used they are required to show a sign stating it is used.
The UK does not have privacy laws as such other than you are entitled to it where there is reasonable expectation.
The rules are around how long you keep the data, what you use it for (if you disclose it to third parties) - on your own home, only recording what happens there won't be seen as illegal unless you're distributing it to third parties.
If it is only used to detect crime and wrongdoing, any recording anywhere, will not be seen as illegal as the illegal act or wrongdoing supersedes the recording.

Re: Ring Doorbell Audio
All you do if they are out and answer the doorbell is to mime 'hello' a few times so they can't hear you. The customer then thinks there is a fault with the bell.
But to be honest i reckon only 20% of the time they do answer, which begs the question why pay out for it in the first place? Get the feeling they won't last long in our weather.

I hate these things. I never use them, but always assume I'm being filmed anyway. It all feels like a real violation of my privacy.
If I ever ended up on the internet, some "hilarious" video of postie banging their head or being chased by a dog or summat, I would lawyer up and pursue it to the highest court I could. Just to try and learn 'em.

Re: Ring Doorbell Audio
Ring 'doorbells' push the definition of Closed Circuit TeleVision to breaking point. Sending the signal to an Amazon server farm is not the same as a camera plugged into a DVR on private property. It's far more akin to being an unwilling participant in a reality tv wind-up while trying to go about your day in peace.TrueBlueTerrier wrote: ↑20 Apr 2021, 07:53They can, within certain limitations but there are certain laws around CCTV (which applies to Ring Bells) these range from Data Protection, GDPR and specific laws around having signs informing people that they may be under surveillance.
