Musculoskeletal on Collections

Post by burton76 »

I know loads of people have musculoskeletal issues on delivery but wanted to know people's experience of this on the Collections side.

Thanks.

Heavy, overloaded Post office bags. Reported several times but nothing ever gets done.

If the bags are overweight, just refuse to take them. :thumbup

Many of the policies like not picking up overweight bags may not translate to reality. Someone else will be asked to get it if you don't.

It can be made clear you pick up the bags,

This is probably the worst and there's a few culprits who are notorious for it on my collection, even some post office's too! Maybe bending down at pillar boxes, be sensible and squat!

Other than that, along with delivery, as you're driving a van in stop start traffic any underlying problems with your left knee are exacerbated, and getting in and out the van, but yeah these are all van related.

Might be a silly suggestion but can't you just take some empty bags in and transfer some of the items until the bags are a manageable weight.

The problem is a bag looks like a bag.
You often don't know it's overweight until you try to lift it which is usually when the damage is done because your body isn't positioned to lift a heavy weight.

You could of course assume that every bag is potentially overweight but the point is you shouldn't have to because they shouldn't be.

Yeah I totally agree, personally I would "test" the bag which would then enable me to ascertain if it was too heavy to lift safely and if that was the case I would take measures as previously suggested to ensure that I could transfer the bag to my van without causing any injury to myself and also anyone else who would in turn be required to handle the bag at a later instance.
