Dear all,
Just seen the poster regarding Sunday parcels and covid kits delivery. They need around 10 frm our of office to cover this duty. Right now only 4 guys
delivering covid and parcels on sundays. Recently we noticed that we start to get more parcels than few weeks ago. Less covid tests but more tracked parcels.
Rates as per the Poster:
From £13.91 per hour (OT rate)
Rising to £14.73(Scheduled Attendance rate)
11am-5pm (6 hours)
- Increasing in your contractual hours (What does this exactly means?)
I am a PT on 25 per week. If i agree to work on a sunday parcel delivery will i be able to get a fixed 25+6 hours contract? Or does these hours matter when I am on Annual leave where i will be paid 31 hours instead of 25 hours??
What are your thoughts about this new position.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Volunteers - Sunday Parcels and Covid kits delivery
How can it rise to the SA rate, it’s either pressure OT at Sunday rate or it’s SA. The going rate up here is 6 hours SA. They are desperate at the moment to get people to commit to do these duty’s permanently, I guess it saves them the hassle of begging people each week. I would speak to your rep and ask for advice but the latest thing seems to be offering full time contracts in return for taking theses duty’s up every week.

Just my opinion but if you’re doing it for the annual leave reason I’d hold back for now - fingers crossed when it’s in court in the summer RM are found ‘guilty’ and have to start paying your average hours worked.
However if you currently don’t get OT and want the extra hours and are happy to work every Sunday from here on in go for it.
I’ve been offered the same contract/deal but have turned it down. If it meant my own duty (or at least cover duty) plus a rolling day off I’d be more interested. But I’ve no interest in working every single weekend and only getting Tuesday and Friday (or Thursday if Friday is busy) off.

The day is gonna come when we’re all gonna have to testify.

It means that say you are on say a 25 hour contract if you commit to the Sundays they will give you a contract increase of the 6 hours so you'll be on a 31 hour contract going forward but you are tied in to the Sunday. Quite a good carrot to dangle.

In case if we sign for the Sunday parcel work, are we allowed to cancel with a proper notice and go back to the previous hours we usually work?

Re: Volunteers - Sunday Parcels and Covid kits delivery
In my office i was the only one that applied. Not really bothered about losing a day off. £100+ quid a shift. £100 is £100, so I'll be able to pay for my CPC/C+E in a few months.
Applied 2 weeks ago, then a few days later i got told to come in on the 18th April (today) and they'd have some stuff for me.
Got into the office, and got turned away.
So despite telling me 2 weeks ago to come in today they had the bollocks to try and tell me "we said we'd tell you as and when we wanted you in".
Fuming.
To add insult to injury I was told they'd got 4 agency staff to come in and do it instead, which made me about turn and go home without even saying bye.
Seriously. Management complain to me that they're having problems with agency:
-not dibbing stuff properly and losing parcels
-not being able to deliver specials
-only taking 20-30 packets and no mail and taking full pay (and having to pay agency the same)
And still screw permanent staffers over.
You'll all say "tell the union" but the union are the ones running this Sunday shift at our work.
Just gonna get my CPC on credit and sail into the sunset.

If they want these Sunday shifts doing it would be a start by not p***ing off the only person who volunteered for it. I’m not surprised/shocked though. I bet they overbooked on agency staff and knew they have to pay them regardless. Their problem has become yours.

Re: Volunteers - Sunday Parcels and Covid kits delivery
Right now 4 people delivering parcels and the covid kits.
5 hours from 9 to 2. But we always manage to finish by 12.30 or earlier.
Do you think we will get more parcels hereafter as they want the shift to run from 11 to 5pm.

Re: Volunteers - Sunday Parcels and Covid kits delivery
I think you guys may be right about agency staff over booked or too much relied on. At the same time I've been told about reliability issues of agency staff and how they would prefer regular posties. However when it comes to the day in question still they get temp workers. If the service pulls off and agency staff won't be able to cope at all they will be in for a shock. They do piss regular posties off who volunteered, they may need them very much pretty soon and it might be already too late. So good luck RM

Re: Volunteers - Sunday Parcels and Covid kits delivery
Why didn't you ask your manager last week if you were still required yesterday, given in my experience things in the DO's seem to change from day to day let alone week to week. As far as using temp. staff given they seem happy to work Sunday's then the RM do seem to be taking the sensible, and possibly only, option at some DO's, even if they aren't as reliable as regular posties they are at least prepared to work Sunday's.xPandabear1992x wrote: ↑18 Apr 2021, 14:35In my office i was the only one that applied.
