Longs and Shorts

Post by Selhurst »

I keep hearing this term “Longs and Shorts” don’t want to show my ignorance at briefing by asking the definition, so can it be kindly explained in layman’s terms please? Thought I’d wait till today to ask the question as I would probably get the April fools joke of long trousers vs short trousers :chuckle

Rather than working 5 equal days a week your hours are different on certain days of the week to match traffic.

Long Monday, short Tuesday etc, etc

Only really applicable to full-time staff or at least those working full days.

As with any other day that is the official finish time. I think the official finish time in our office is 1333 but I finished at 1505 on Saturday.

You chose to finish at 15.05 on Saturday.

How on earth are you able to have a 75 minute time difference of finishing between Wed/Thurs and Saturday?
For that to work you'd need to be getting out on delivery MUCH earlier on a Saturday surely?

Good question, I'd say our recent Saturday's have been as busy as Thursdays, these times were put in at the last revision, pre parcel boom, about 5 years ago. Some saturday's i can be finished before 12, others after 1.

Ah, that makes a bit more sense then. I can imagine that long and shorts with different finishing times will be a thing of the past after the revisions this year - that's not to say that starting times will still be the same, thus still keeping some days longer than others. 6:30am on a Monday for instance to get all the door to doors prepped, then 7am on a Tuesday, just for example.
Our finish time is exactly the same every day, there are only slight differences in start times from day to day. The upshot of that is that it's extremely easy to calculate how much to take every day, our office hasn't cleared on consecutive days for over a year now.
