Royal Mail has now confirmed why residents in Basingstoke have experienced delays to receiving post this week, explaining that “a number of colleagues have tested positive for coronavirus at the Basingstoke delivery office” in Priestley Road.
As previously reported, residents in the town have reported problems with post this week, with some areas of the town receiving no post at all on Friday and Saturday.
Royal Mail initially told the Gazette it would investigate the matter on Monday.
However, a spokesperson for Royal Mail has now confirmed the cause of the problems, saying: “Every decision we make puts the health of our people and customers first.
“A number of colleagues have tested positive for coronavirus at the Basingstoke Delivery Office. They are now at home recovering, and we wish them a speedy recovery.
“More colleagues are self-isolating as a result of Test and Trace guidance. We are taking all necessary precautions and preventative measures, and we are working hard to deliver as normal a service as we can.”
They added: “Since the start of the crisis, we have said that despite our best endeavours, it is possible that some areas of the country may experience a reduction in service levels due to the ongoing impact of Covid-related staff absences and necessary social distancing measures at local mail centres and delivery offices. We thank any impacted customers for their patience and understanding.”

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Some residents have had no post for two days
MYSTERY surrounds why there are post delivery problems in Basingstoke this week.
Residents in the town have reported problems with the post over the last few days, with some areas of the town receiving no post on Friday and Saturday at all.
Others have said they have been waiting days for important documents, including parents waiting for information on their child’s secondary school place.
A Gazette reporter posted a first-class letter to a Basingstoke address on Monday, and by Saturday it had still not arrived.
One resident who enquired about the problems was told that Royal Mail is having difficulties because of staffing issues at the sorting office in Priestley Road.
The Gazette has asked Royal Mail for further information, and a spokesperson responded to say they would investigate the matter on Monday.
This was the news item that was done before the 1st one was done.

BASINGSTOKE’S delivery office is experiencing “very high levels of absence” this week following a Covid outbreak, resulting in further disruption to postal services across the town.
Information on the Royal Mail website states that it cannot guarantee that deliveries will happen every other day in Basingstoke, but it is prioritising the delivery of Covid-19 vaccination letters and test kits.
Royal Mail told the Gazette yesterday that “a number of colleagues have tested positive for coronavirus at the Basingstoke delivery office” in Priestley Road, resulting in delays to postal deliveries across the town.
It confirmed today that around 29 members of staff are isolating “as a result of Test and Trace guidance”.
However, it has not confirmed how many staff are off altogether.
A member of staff who works at the delivery office said that more than 70 of his colleagues are off work.
Ady Hargreaves, who works for Royal Mail, posted on The Gazette’s Facebook page on Sunday saying: “Over 70 of my work colleagues off, either with Covid, isolating or awaiting test results. We are trying to get things delivered, trying to cover three walks each instead of our normal one.
“People are working their days off, and also cancelling their holidays to help get things moving. Also, people working on a Sunday to help. Please be patient with us, we are doing our best.”
A spokesperson for Royal Mail said: “We are managing the situation by offering our people additional overtime and deploying additional temporary workers. We are taking necessary precautions and preventative measures and are working hard to deliver as normal a service as we can.”
It said it expects staffing levels to “return to normal over the coming weeks” adding: “As well as encouraging good hand hygiene, standard ways of working have been revised to ensure that colleagues maintain appropriate social distancing at all times.”

POSTAL services in Basingstoke are expected to improve from early next week as Royal Mail said most of its staff should be back at work by then.
As previously reported, Basingstoke’s delivery office in Priestley Road has been experiencing “very high levels of absence” following a Covid outbreak.
Royal Mail has now confirmed that five members of staff tested positive for Covid, and that there have been no more positive cases at the Basingstoke delivery office.
It added: “We wish our five sick colleagues a speedy recovery at home. Over the past two weeks, many of our colleagues have had to self-isolate in line with Test and Trace guidance.
"This has inevitably taken a toll on local service levels, but we continue to provide the most comprehensive service we can, with most customers receiving mail on alternate days at the very least. We expect the majority of our colleagues to return to work by early next week.”
It added: “We are managing the situation by offering our people additional overtime and deploying additional temporary workers. We continue to take necessary precautions and preventative measures.
