Apathy in the workplace?
So virtually the whole country is in Tier 4, daily cases over 50,000, over 70, 000 deaths.
So why the complete, abject failure of Royal Mail employees the length of the country to observe social distancing and wear masks in the workplace?
Our own DOM came around when the guidance for wearing masks in our workplace was made mandatory and asked people if they wanted to wear them or not. Since when has mandatory meant you have the choice? I understand totally why some people can't wear them which is fair enough but for people not to wear them just because they don't want to/think covid is a hoax/not dangerous is farcical.
And finally say 80% of your office isn't wearing a mask (like where I'm based) and there's a covid outbreak. What happens if somebody went to the HSE and told them that the manager wasn't enforcing mandatory wearing of masks?
I know it's a two way street and that a lot of the staff are to blame for the pathetic attempts at social distancing, non wearing of masks etc but surely Royal Mail have a responsibility to make sure H&S rules surrounding covid are enforced. Not just ignored by so many people.

Mandatory in our office, you would be marched off the premises if you didn't wear one without a good reason.

50% now not wearing a mask in our office .Some had been approached by boss and asked why and reply was “ health issues” and it was never mentioned again and others never asked for a reason

Pass through cross - docking operation at NDC every day. Probably 30% wearing mask, 30% not wearing mask at all, and the rest wearing them as some sort of ‘neck warmer’, which I feel is worse as they acknowledge that they should wear a mask but think they can get away with it not covering any of their face holes. This ratio applies to managers too. When you consider that there are visiting drivers from as far afield as Exeter and Newcastle and everywhere inbetween i can’t believe there hasn’t been a massive outbreak there. Maybe the new Covid strain will get its teeth into the place.

99% wearing them at my place of work, but social distancing, that’s a joke!

Every day the dom + manager+ union rep come round to make sure we are all observing the rules, and god help you if you are not.

Re: Apathy in the workplace?
Mask wearing at 75% (but dropping) in our office, enforced social distancing non existent. Also seems the few that don't wear masks also happy to work together in a group of 5/6 in the bullring/on IPS with little space between them.
Managers have no backbone so won't challenge those not wearing masks, also at the same time won't challenge any of us that refuse to help out on sorting due to lack of social distancing.
Initially we had every other frame on the IPS taped off but that was removed before Christmas
. Loads still collecting mail from behind sorter rather than from back of the frame.
Office definitely getting more and more complacent, corners being cut by management and staff (noticed an increase in doorstepping recently). Been off since Christmas but two to a van creeping back in.
Now more than ever its definitely becoming a case of look after yourself. Don't risk your health or your job, which plenty are doing.

Re: Apathy in the workplace?
The worst part for me about the people in our unit not observing distance and masks, is that they have used Covid as an excuse to not do anything they don't want to.
Refusing to go onto IPS as it's not safe - but will stand 2 at an RM2000 frame prepping and bundling up with different people in an attempt to get out the door and finish 1hr early.
Covid is a good/bad thing depending on how they can twist it.

This in a nutshell is what my office is like! Observe covid rules when it suites them.Cucumber wrote: ↑03 Jan 2021, 16:15The worst part for me about the people in our unit not observing distance and masks, is that they have used Covid as an excuse to not do anything they don't want to.

Re: Apathy in the workplace?
Our unit in a MC consists of 16 members of staff in a small area. 2x wearing masks/face shields, the rest? No chance. They can't/won't social distance and the management are taking no notice despite it being reported numerous times, all you get is a shrug of the shoulders. No manager for full shift (he calls in now and then). Have considered reporting it to HSE but am wary of being identified.

Re: Apathy in the workplace?
Have a search for LTB544/20, entitled RMG/CWU Joint Statement Dealing With Coronavirus/ Covid 19 - Protecting And Putting Employees First And Introduction Of Mandatory Face Masks. Lots of statements of intent of what is to be done to keep the workforce healthy, so plenty of ammunition to “hold their feet to the fire” when it comes to some sort of action! One would hope that the Union would be all over it too, and as it has their blessing we can also question why they are being so complacent with keeping their Members safe in the workplace!
