Recently suffered large meniscus radial tear to right knee, together with ongoing arthritis pain to left hip,got referred to physio through occ health, now back doing full rural duty after some resting time in office, still in pain and limping round, not sure of options available to me etc,and what management vshiuld be doing to help me after nearly 40 years,a bit miffed to say the least, round taking me right up to time which is fine but a struggle,I’d love evr if possible, etc, anyone else in the same boat and how are you being helped and managed?

Sorry to hear of your problem but I think that’s the way most posties are going to end up. My knees are starting to play up have probably no chance of reaching retirement age in the job now.

Yes am sure your right my friend,am 59/and in my 38 th year in this once lovely un pressured likeable job,now it’s a gutty slog to complete on time on busy days, with clueless managers continuing to miss manage,we will see how much I can put up with, don’t fancy crippling my body for this company at all!derekm wrote:Sorry to hear of your problem but I think that’s the way most posties are going to end up. Limp around for long enough in our office and you seem to get paid off. Loads of people just disappear mysteriously, when I ask, haven't seen so and so for a while, get told, oh, they got paid off!robbertwhitton wrote:Anyone suffer knee and hip problems? Rurals can really do your body in, people think they're easy but getting in and out of van up to 100 times a day, seat belt on and off, knackers your right knee in particular and shoulder . That's what I've found anyway. Maybe I should go off sick for a bit, a few times, until they pay me off and ship me quietly out the back door.

This post should be blown up and laminated then sent to every office for the runners to read. Of course, the 'managers' wouldn't put it up coz they love posties running around with a bag on the shoulder .broughts wrote:Just had total hip replacement after 30 years service left side was knackered all those years of heavy bags on left side pounding the streets cramming in as much as possible easily 20+ kilos at a time and a bundle the hulk would have trouble holding if only I knew then would never have done it

Speak to your doctor about doing yoga and pilates (seriously) to help with stretching and strengthening those areas and help reduce any further damage the job is inevitably going to cause. I went on IHR, but management in the area wanted me gone, so it is still a possibility to go if there is a chance of long term sick leave or damage to your health. As for the arthritis I'd suggest a good high strength turmeric supplement to help with inflammation. Since I left and got heavily into the above suggestions it's like having a new body. Joints are so less sore and stiff and getting a spring in my step again.robbertwhitton wrote:Anyone suffer knee and hip problems? All that is why I never carried a bag on the same shoulder all the time. Either swapped it over after each bundle or when I refilled the pouch. As for bundle sizes I kept them to what I could grip with my hand. Saw far too many with massive bundles that looked like they were cradling a rugby ball or baby end up with ruined shoulders, necks and carpal tunnel syndrome in their wrists.broughts wrote:Just had total hip replacement after 30 years service left side was knackered all those years of heavy bags on left side pounding the streets cramming in as much as possible easily 20+ kilos at a time and a bundle the hulk would have trouble holding if only I knew then would never have done it

ive had 2 knee replacements, so they got me onto a duty that was all flat terrain. the duty was ringfenced for me in the last repick in 2010. got a letter from OHS (was ATOS back then) that i would only ever be able to perform at the standard i am now as i am now under the equality act. i can still do my duty in the 4.45 our spans are set at. but i go over quite a lot now that we are not van sharing. but if it had not been for the knee surgery i simply would have had no chance whatsoever of keeping my job. its painful at first when you get it done but it works wonders. after being off for 3 and a half months on each knee then 8 weeks of rehab i was back on partial duty then eventually up to full. had them done over 10 yrs now. if no redundancies are on the horizon you may need to consider surgery as your retirement age is going to be around 67.

Many thanks for your reply,I am being referred to see an orthopaedic surgeon but not till next March, have had mri scan and a bit of physio and a report through occ health in Royal Mail.just see how I get on,I have a few estates I deliver as part of my rural delivery which isn’t ideal for walking but neither is the stop start in and out of the van but that’s the job I’m afraiddaveyeff wrote:ive had 2 knee replacements, so they got me onto a duty that was all flat terrain. the duty was ringfenced for me in the last repick in 2010. got a letter from OHS (was ATOS back then) that i would only ever be able to perform at the standard i am now as i am now under the equality act. i can still do my duty in the 4.45 our spans are set at. but i go over quite a lot now that we are not van sharing. but if it had not been for the knee surgery i simply would have had no chance whatsoever of keeping my job. its painful at first when you get it done but it works wonders. after being off for 3 and a half months on each knee then 8 weeks of rehab i was back on partial duty then eventually up to full. had them done over 10 yrs now. if no redundancies are on the horizon you may need to consider surgery as your retirement age is going to be around 67.

Have you ever been in the armed forces Robert? as there is a specialist that does knee surgery with a lot less waiting time and by all accounts does a fantastic job,but it's only for veteransrobbertwhitton wrote:Many thanks for your reply,I am being referred to see an orthopaedic surgeon but not till next March, have had mri scan and a bit of physio and a report through occ health in Royal Mail.just see how I get on,I have a few estates I deliver as part of my rural delivery which isn’t ideal for walking but neither is the stop start in and out of the van but that’s the job I’m afraiddaveyeff wrote:ive had 2 knee replacements, so they got me onto a duty that was all flat terrain. the duty was ringfenced for me in the last repick in 2010. got a letter from OHS (was ATOS back then) that i would only ever be able to perform at the standard i am now as i am now under the equality act. i can still do my duty in the 4.45 our spans are set at. but i go over quite a lot now that we are not van sharing. but if it had not been for the knee surgery i simply would have had no chance whatsoever of keeping my job. its painful at first when you get it done but it works wonders. after being off for 3 and a half months on each knee then 8 weeks of rehab i was back on partial duty then eventually up to full. had them done over 10 yrs now. if no redundancies are on the horizon you may need to consider surgery as your retirement age is going to be around 67.
