Can anyone tell me are we contractually obliged to accept the bank hol as our day off with a holiday in lieu? Should we be asked if we’re willing to give up the day off like in the case of overtime where it’s optional?

If the screws can't offer you the day back in that same week you can have it paid as overtime. If you get any bull from them take it to rep/area rep ASAP.
