I think most lease or PCP deals would prohibit the use of the vehicle for work (other than commuting) without fully comprehensive business insurance, it is after all not your vehicle. Most of them also have very tight limits on annual mileage that would make using it for work purposes potentially very expensive if you end up going over your limit.Yamr1 wrote:Insured only third party ,if car on lease or PCP and you use it your snookerd if anything happens even third party with royal mail . Wouldn't fancy being the manager involved who puts it through as OT rather than expenses if there was ever a fact finding investigation due to a crash/bump.

RM have laid down "official" rules for using your own car and it pays a mileage rate and gives some insurance cover, the CWU issued a Letter to Branches https://www.royalmailchat.co.uk/communi ... wn+vehicle" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
If your office is paying overtime instead of doing things the "official" way it sounds very dodgy in my opinion, the neighbouring office seems to be doing things the correct way.

Having only just read that (having no need to due to the fact I wouldn't use my OMV) I came across this little nugget -fb1969 wrote:RM have laid down "official" rules for using your own car and it pays a mileage rate and gives some insurance cover, the CWU issued a Letter to Branches https://www.royalmailchat.co.uk/communi ... wn+vehicle" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

"Only recognised Royal Mail Drivers can participate, it excludes those removed from driving or those excluded on medical grounds and these rules must be properly applied."
Plenty people who can't/won't drive for RM are using their own cars.

I would say there is a difference between removed/excluded and can't/won't.
Removed or excluded would be RM not letting them drive, can't/won't is the individual saying they won't drive.
Whether using their own car would mean they are "recognised" drivers is another matter, something that a decent manager would look into - sadly this is RM so it would never happen.

Either way they need to be recognised drivers. By that I mean having done their driving training (With AA/RAC or whatever company it is these days)fb1969 wrote:I would say there is a difference between removed/excluded and can't/won't.

Had to laugh when I heard today that the DOM is dropping Posties off at the start of their walk due to only one allowed in a van IN HIS OWN CAR

Any clue on why you have to be a RM driver to use you car on delivery though? Is it an insurance thing (RM covering you 3rd party) or a legal thing?fb1969 wrote:I would say there is a difference between removed/excluded and can't/won't.

Say "Johnny" has had one bump too many years ago and the fleet manager decided he is being relieved of driving duties, now he is no longer a recognised RM driver, but he decides to use his OMV to get to his duty. That's surely falling foul of the rules.
People who won't drive for RM and therefore haven't been trained (their call), but will use their OMV during these times?
Or heaven forbid, someone with medical reasons that RM decide to remove you from driving as it's not worth the risk, but the DVLA allow you to keep your licence, they shouldn't be using OMV's either I'd imagine.

I would think it is for insurance. As RM underwrite it themselves they need some check system and they take the driving assessment as that. I wasn't defending anything or anyone in my post that you quote, just saying it as it is - RM's inability or refusal to employ managers that can actually manage people means nothing is ever done as it should be.
We have two long service that don't drive for RM because RM don't want to insure them. Both have a driving licence and drive to work, so they can drive but RM don't want them to - when they joined "with driving" wasn't part of the job description. One is on an HCT round and the other walks out and back to a van share.

Our office doesn't pay anything for those using their own vehicle to get to their starting point. There are one or two posties that drive home and then go to their start point and work from the van with their colleague. As far as I'm aware both Royal Mail and the CWU are fine with this as long as posties don't start jumping in the van together.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.
