What constitutes a "pattern" in this instance?
Is this brought up when you've triggered a stage?
What can they actually do if they reckon there is a "pattern"?
For example, threaten to withhold sick pay for any further absences?

They look for stuff like regular Saturdays off, or Cheltenham race week, or local derbies - anything that might suggest the absence is not genuine.
If you are regularly off on Saturday because you get bladdered on Friday night they might suggest AA or other counselling.
What can they do? Not a lot the first time except mention it. (Obviously if you have posted pictures of yourself at the races etc then it is a different story)
All absences are to be treated as genuine. (even if after two weeks off in November you return with a glorious suntan)
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

They are also supposed to look for patterns in the illness as well because there's no better medical expert than a Royal Mail manager.

In fact I'm surprised they haven't replaced Chris Whitty with one of our guys.

Yeah we had a guy who went off with a bad back every year for Cheltenham, another always rang in on his birthday ! The bosses must have known from overhearing the banter but did nothing.

We had one who made an appearance on the BBC coverage of Glastonbury.
