Changes to service

Temporary change to postal arrangements on Saturdays
Our postmen and postwomen are working very hard across the UK in challenging conditions. As we said at the start of the coronavirus crisis, there will be some disruption to services. Relevant factors include high levels of coronavirus-related absences and necessary social distancing measures.

We understand the importance of the postal service in keeping the UK connected at this time. We have also listened to our hard-working colleagues who have asked us to ease the additional burden on them if possible. As a result, we are making some temporary changes to postal services.

From 2 May we will temporarily no longer deliver letters on a Saturday. We will continue to provide a letter delivery service from Monday to Friday as normal. We will continue to deliver Special Delivery, Tracked, all non-account services and most other parcels from Monday to Saturday across the country.

Customers should continue to post both letters and parcels as usual on Saturday. We will continue our Saturday collections from businesses, post offices and post boxes as normal.
Services now delivered on a Saturday
1st Class Parcels
1st Class Signed For Parcels, Large Letters and Letters
2nd Class Parcels
2nd Class Signed For Parcels, Large Letters and Letters
Royal Mail 24 Parcels and Large Letters
Royal Mail Tracked 24 & 48 Parcels and Tracked Letterboxable formats
Royal Mail Tracked Returns
Special Delivery Guaranteed by 9am* (all formats)
Special Delivery Guaranteed by 1pm* (all formats)
International import tracked services (all formats)

* We currently have some temporary changes to the timings of our guarantees on Special Delivery Guaranteed services in force (9am and 1pm).
The time has come to stop turning the other cheek, time to stop shaking our heads in bitter dismay, time to stop mumbling our angry words.
The time has come for union.

Just received an email from our DOM on this but there isn't much detail. Does it mean no delivery on Saturdays?

I would think from the sentence below that it will be a restricted Saturday delivery.

'We will continue to deliver Special Delivery, Tracked, all non-account services and most other parcels from Monday to Saturday across the country.'

Also the first Saturday is the day after the VE bank holiday Friday.

Our office the deliveries are only going out every other day so that means some deliveries will only get their letters twice a week which means huge workloads for all of us

Striking would be catastrophic. When people are losing their jobs, being furloughed, making sacrifices and dying, we would be slaughtered by public and press. We are lucky we can still work. There’s a time for a strike and it ain’t now

They wont let us strike as the courts will block it again.

Bottom line is that this is a full out attack on the USO. Their using the pandemic as a reason to help us but the truth is this will lead to the loss of about 20k jobs and has been part of their "Big Plan" all along.
Rows of houses all bearing down on me........I can feel their blue hands touching me.......All these things in all positions.........All these things will one day take control..........

Royal mail are making changes now which will be hard if not impossible to reverse when this is over. It may not be the best time to strike. But if we put the fight off for to long we might not have anything left to fight for.

The announcement says from May 2nd so I guess it means we are starting this debacle on Saturday of this week.
They also say signed for items will still be delivered but as they are mixed in with the other letters that is unlikely to happen.
This really just looks like another part of the hidden agenda to remove RM from letter delivery later this year. Bit of a surprise that the regulator and/or the government have given the go-ahead to this change so easily. Posties and the union have not asked for this change and it will make our job more difficult as it will introduce additional bottlenecks in the mailstream.

Why are people shocked by this?
RM were waiting for a chance to introduce this, all the people on here insisting it would be a Tuesday that would go...
FIRMS are closed on a Saturday NOT shops, it makes sense to RM.
Putting everyone on a mon - Friday, They won't need rest day covers, saving them jobs, and a fortune...

They've seen Pullinger and ward sit there with a massive yes vote in their pocket and do ...NOTHING
so they are calling them out, believing the public would side with them, if we call a strike we will be seen as the bad guys, you can gurentee they will be running to the courts as soon as we serve notice on them.

THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN SET UP WEEKS AGO BY THE UNION BUT NOW THEYVE WASTED SO MUCH TIME THAT I FEAR IT WILL BE TOO LATE

You can't strike during a national emergency, you just can't do it. We would end up like the miners, no support from the media or Government and with an employer who can destroy us with no public objection.

Working to rule would be a FAR better option. We could show how badly run the company is, how it relies on our goodwill and keep public support on our side.

BIG QUESTION THOUGH - if they keep 5 days a week for letters permanently and accept they will only use VOLUNTARY redundancies to cut staff should we even object?

Nobody wants to work Saturdays anyway. So we'd likely get 2 in 3 Sat's off or some could get every Sat off. That means far more full weekends to spend with family - and only those who want to leave their job will go. Yes the Union numbers will be reduced but we will still be the vast majority of the workforce with the same ability to strike effectively. If Union subs had to go up a quid per week to make up for the loss of CWU income I'd gladly trade that for an extra 20 Saturdays off each year.
