Royal Mail Executives Spend Lockdown in Continental Homes as Posties Continue to Work

Alastair Grant, UK

The UK's formally publicly-owned Royal Mail service has been designated as a vital industry and its employees key workers as they continue to maintain the flow of mail across the country, while executives have been working remotely from their continental mansions.

The chief executive of Royal Mail is facing demands to return to the UK after it was revealed that he is spending his quarantine in a Swiss penthouse, the Daily Mail reports.

The German millionaire has been running the formerly-public delivery company remotely from his family home overlooking Lake Zurich, worth £2.3 million, amid the introduction of a national lockdown by the British government.

Operating chief, Achim Dunnwald, has also been working from his home in Germany while Royal Mail postal workers and staff continue working to ensure the delivery of mail for the quarantined nation.

The 66-year old, who has been dubbed 'the Flying Postman' due to his constant commutes to the UK, is now facing calls to cut his pay after Royal Mail investors (which include most company employees) saw dividends cut to conserve funds, as the 504-year-old firm faces pressure amid the economic downturn.

"This is truly a case of lions being led by a donkey", said Cliff Weight, director of ShareSov, a campaign organisation for small shareholders.

"Why should shareholders buy shares in a company run by a board and chief executive like this, who keep getting themselves into such a pickle?", he added.
A union chief has demanded that Back either return to the UK or step down, following contentions over protective equipment for posties and a restructuring of the company to keep workers safe on the job.

"The UK is gripped by the coronavirus crisis. Postal workers are keeping our communities connected", said Communication Workers Union General Secretary Dave Ward.
"By any measure, it is not acceptable for the chief executive of the UK postal service to live and work abroad – at this, or frankly any other time", he said.

The CWU issued demands to the government at the end of March, including a drastic reduction of mail deliveries and a closure of branches which put workers at risk.

Ward called for the service to cease functioning “as a commercial operation" and instead operate as a vital national service, as the government considers the postal employees to be key workers.

“All unaddressed advertising mail should be immediately suspended", he said.
“In conjunction with the government we should look to maximise the opportunity for Royal Mail’s unrivalled infrastructure to be utilised in helping the country deal with the coronavirus crisis".

A Royal Mail spokesperson said that Back is "completely focused on our priorities" during the coronavirus crisis and is dedicated to protecting postal workers, the country, and the company.

"Rico is devoting all his time to the continued delivery of these objectives. This includes government advice to work from home unless you absolutely cannot", she said.

The German multimillionaire took over as the head of the British postal service in June 2018 from Moya Greene, the executive of the corporation who oversaw the services' privatisation by the coalition government in 2013.

why is the union putting up with this ? Why should we all risk our health and our families health when the vermin that is rico and his chums are in hiding. Now is a perfect time to strike when the public actually realise our importance. It may be a selfish attitude but a 1/2 day strike may be the wake up call that our so called leaders require.

That would take at least a couple of weeks as afaik a separate ballot would be required, plus potentially (I don't know if it actually would) the mediation process would have to be gone through. In any case my gut feeling is that a strike would be blocked by the government

it's very easy for Rico to return to the UK. The word on the street is that he could simply jump on his GLS private jet that's stationed in Zurich, as usual, and save himself a few quid!:

It might sound like a silly question but why does where he lives have any relevance to anything?
If he was in Barnsley or Aberdeen or if he was holed up in Tresco Abbey, what difference would that make to anything? Really?

Clashcityrocker, here is what real CEO executive leadership during the COVD 19 Pandemic looks like:

“ 'All hands on deck': Grocery store executives get a taste of the hard life on coronavirus front lines

https://business.financialpost.com/news ... 9-pandemic

Note:

Even the chief executive of Longo’s, has made a point of working in the store.“Everyone in our business is all hands on deck,” said Anthony Longo, who regularly visits stores and distribution centres, helping to stock shelves if new shipments come in, or bagging groceries when check-out lines are long.
At Loblaw, roughly 400 corporate-level staff now work at stores. Walmart said it asked its head-office employees to shift to in-store work in mid-March and has since had dozens of volunteers. And, late last month, Empire Co. Ltd., parent company of the Sobeys, Safeway and FreshCo chains, sent a note asking interested corporate staff to fill out a survey about their relevant experience, so they could be placed in the right job.

The bottom line is that Rico Back should be domiciled in the UK at this critical time, and should have deployed all of his executive team to Mail Centres and Delivery Offices across the country to help out the frontline essential workers. Rico himself should be out at the coal face, criss-crossing the country (keeping social distancing of course), being visible to the troops and boosting team morale. You can’t do this in absentia from your Zurich penthouse. Shameful!

Clashcityrocker, here is what real CEO executive leadership during the COVD 19 Pandemic looks like:

Firstly you state this is what a CEO should be doing during this crisis.
Ward says he should be living in the UK at all times.
Again I ask why?
It appears to fit in with the racist ans xenophobic undertones to a lot of their (Ward and TP) recent statements.

Secondly you seem to quote a lot of businesses that I have never heard of. I assume they are American. Maybe it explains why they have so many dead. Which bit of "Stay at Home" is difficult to understand.

Thirdly RM has a scheme where senior managers work on the front line. The last thing we need at the moment is someone incompetent turning up, cluttering up the space to prove that they are "pitching in". That won't improve morale.
That isn't leadership. it is tantamount to corporate manslaughter.
Stay at home. Save lives.
And stop spouting populist nonsense which doesn't mean anything.

Are you happy with our CEO's behaviour Clash? I think it's important that any Leader should show his face, and support, to his employees. It may be seen as Bullshit, but nothing looks worse than a leader doing Nothing. Rico gets paid a Very Large Salary to Lead this Company ..... I think it's about time he did some Leading. :hmmmm

Admitedly it's a difficult Balancing Act. You may not appreciate him visiting your DO, I wouldn't be that impressed either, but even if a few thousand less cynical posties end up feeling a bit more appreciated by their CEO then I think it's worth a punt. I think we sometimes underestimate the impact this crisis is having on some of our less robust colleagues? That's why you'll always see The PM, or members of the Royal Household visiting the scenes of disasters, it's the public perception of how Leaders behave. :cuppa

I don't give a s**t about his behaviour really. I don't share this homoerotic obsession with Rico that so many seem to have.
The advice is to work from home. If his home happens to be in Geneva then that is where he should work from. As I asked earlier - what difference would it make if he was in Barnsley? Or Gretna?
I don't think he should be criss-crossing the country in some pathetic attempt to improve the morale of the workforce. Nobody else with any brains is doing that.

Many of the CEOS across the nation have been attending workplaces , trying to boost morale, sending out messages of support, pay rises , bonuses, creating a safe work environment etc so although it may mean little to me I think if we are on the frontline then our CEO needs to be too. Maybe then he would understand our need for PPE and I don't see how questioning why the CEO of the Royal Mail is deciding to live thousand of miles away during this time is a Homoerotic obsession. Its a genuine concern.
You don't give s**t about his behaviour ? His behaviour is directly affecting you and your family and colleagues.

Ok. So Rico's 'get out clause' is that he's following advice from the government and working from home.... :Applause Well done Rico...a fine example.

But meanwhile your footsoldiers are out here dutifully working away, and all we get is some lukewarm response via the latest Courier mag.

Where is your personality Rico? I can't believe that a man in your position is shy. Why don't you, in this age of telecommunications, give a speech via video, as everyone else is doing at the moment? Why don't you engage with your workforce?

You really are raising questions about the importance of a CEO.
