I would expect RM to be making big profits at the moment but does anyone have a view on this and the future impact on the business?
There may be more factors but I was thinking of the following still coming out as profitable:
- huge increase in packets for time of year
- drop in mail volumes
- staffing costs increase (some offices are paying overtime to cover people sick or self-isolating, our office is also sometimes getting all duties covered to stop lapsing so additional costs)

Almost impossible to say really, given that RM have always used a supposed lack of profits as a stick to beat the workforce with.
They've also been historically very good at cooking the books to 'hide' profits (anyone recall the year we were due to receive our ''Colleague Shares'' payout, only for the company to make the announcement that they had unexpectedly not made a profit that year, rendering our colleague shares worthless, only for the profits to miraculously return back to normal levels the following year)
Even prior to the CV crisis the company were claiming profits would be hit as they were supposedly investing £1.8 BILLION in Rico's grand plan.. a staggering figure which bears no relation at all to the outlines of the plan.
Even now they're claiming the increase in pkt volumes is actually COSTING the company money due to the high cost of them requiring manual processing and sorting.. all more propaganda to justify the new automated parcel hub proposals.

Yes it would be interesting to calculate just how much that works out at per each DO and MC?

It doesn't feel like it! The last week I must have had a nearly 90% call rate on my letters and going to the other 10% with packets and parcels !! Been finishing 30-60 minutes over my time everyday.bucks123 wrote: - drop in mail volumes
Lots of letters from charities doing corona virus appeals and sooo many medical letters. Lots of flats as well to do with selling gardening/DIY brochures obviously targeting people at home all day. And also getting s**t tons of hand written cards/letters obviously about people writing letters know to pass the time or to check up on relatives!!
If Royal Mail turn around and tell me the mail is down I wont believe it

Our office has had very few letters only three people needed to sort them instead of the normal six, packets have increased its been offset by not needing to wait for signing and walking away as soon as you hear someone is in and most are in so ive been doing more and finishing earlier. The drop in letters can not be argued they know the numbers because the sorting machines tell them.Munchboii wrote:It doesn't feel like it! Less income / additional costs
- drop in letter volume
- less / no D2Ds.
- No lapsing
- Additional sick leave
- o/t to cover other walks or extra parcels
Increased income
- parcels
- boris letter
We are finishing on time which is due to either people are home so less time waiting at doorstep or less call rates due drop in letters. Not lapsing helps too.
One person to a van means it takes longer to finish a van share duty as the passenger walks everywhere. Some passengers dont come to the office at all. They start at the first delivery point and go home when finished the last letter. Driver ties down both frame etc.

Staffing will be worse in MCs as there's a limit as to how many extra staff a MC can get in without compromising the 2m rule. For DOs you've at least go the option of staggered attendance times and once you're out on delivery, there's less risk. Also in DOs there's the opportunity for them to get a really good clean in the evening/overnight every day
