Workers at a Royal Mail delivery office in Bury St Edmunds walked out this morning due to concerns about 'unsafe' working conditions during the coronavirus crisis.

Nicola Iannelli-Popham, Bury St Edmunds constituency Labour Party secretary, said workers walked out of the office, in Skyliner Way, until conditions improved.

Royal Mail said it has since 'resolved areas of concern' and 'colleagues have returned to work'.

Mrs Iannelli-Popham said: "The problem is that the conditions are unsafe as all the workers are in very close contact when they're in there and the Royal Mail hasn't taken provisions to help them through this.

"They're very stressed so this morning they decided to walk out until conditions improved."

A Royal Mail spokesperson said “There was a minor disruption to service this morning at Bury St Edmunds delivery office.

"Working with our people, we have resolved any areas of concern.

"All colleagues have returned to work. Royal Mail takes the health and safety of its colleagues, its customers and the local communities in which we operate very seriously.

"We continue to ensure that colleagues stay two metres apart.

"We have implemented a rule that means there will only be one person in a Royal Mail delivery vehicle at any one time.

"These new social distancing measures are aimed at offering further protection for our colleagues."
