Royal Mail deliveries under threat as union leaders urge workers to call in sick rather than risk contracting coronavirus while postmen say slam lack of protective equipment
Postal workers unhappy with delivering 'pointless junk mail' during lockdown
Soaring absence rates could lead to 'reductions in services'
Union workers encourage staff to call in sick rather than risk catching Covid-19
Coronavirus symptoms: what are they and should you see a doctor?
Royal Mail deliveries could stop as postal workers complain of delivering 'pointless junk mail' during the coronavirus lockdown.
It comes as union leaders are encouraging staff to call in sick, rather than risk catching coronavirus during their daily rounds, The Telegraph reports.
Royal Mail workers were designated as key workers to keep deliveries flowing during the pandemic, but ministers have stopped short of accepting a Communications Workers' Union to become the country's 'fifth emergency service' and deliver only essential supplies such as food, testing kits and medicines'.
'It's not right that postal workers should be risking their lives to deliver pointless junk mail, shopping offers and water pistols,' a CWU spokesman told The Telegraph.
'If the Government doesn’t accept our offer, in three weeks we will have to look again at our support for the key worker status.'
Royal Mail has introduced new rules to keep staff apart in depots, sharing vans has also been put on hold during the pandemic.
Rico Back, Group Chief Executive Officer, Royal Mail, said: 'We are focused on protecting our people, company and the communities we serve during this unprecedented crisis. We are putting the health and well-being of colleagues and customers first.
'At the same time, we are delivering the parcels and letters that are a lifeline for those who cannot leave their homes.'

Who's said that?'It's not right that postal workers should be risking their lives to deliver pointless junk mail, shopping offers and water pistols,' a CWU spokesman told The Telegraph.
'If the Government doesn’t accept our offer, in three weeks we will have to look again at our support for the key worker status.'

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
My BFF Clash
The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

For "essentials" that come through the post, IMO people need:
NHS letters/parcels (plus these testing kits).
Contact lenses, etc (specsavers usually).
Bank cards (if one goes out of date and its replacement hasn't arrived, how do you buy food?) and other bank mail.
Driving licenses and other DVLA notices.
Insurance documents.
Court or legal documents.
Bills (don't want them, but they should be part of priority mail IMO).
DWP mail.
Any mail associated with these new income measures for the SE or business loans, etc.
Any public health mail.
While we deliver the above, it probably isn't hard to deliver the rest of the general mail with it. I'm sure there's other important stuff that I've not listed, but I have a hard time believing the latest fashion or a new plant pot via mail order is particularly important.
That's the message that IMO needs getting across: non-essential parcels are being given priority over most of the above as the stuff listed above is in with the general mail, which we're told is not priority.

RM won`t get that message across as it wants the profits, we can`t as we are not heard...
So we`ll continue to deliver crap and risk spreading or getting coronavirus for RM`s profit.

The fact is marketing mail is going to drop of sharply, many online sites such as Next are ceasing to deliver online, and within the next two weeks the govt is likely to ban all non essential business. At which point we will be twiddling our thumbs and remembers we are not govt subsidised, and this Tory govt are about as likely to nationalise us as Boris is to strip naked and run through the house of commons.

How about look again on MONDAY morning while you are 'working' from home.

Its 3 weeks because by then the govt will have banned all non essential business, not just retail, so royal mail will be delivering nothing but mail for other essential businesses.SSkUNkY wrote:'If the Government doesn’t accept our offer, in THREE WEEKS we will have to look again at our support for the key worker status.'

If mails gonna be that light, why don't royal mail just keep a skeleton staff who want to work through it, and furlough ( or whatever it's called) the rest who don't, and save money, get the GOVT to pay us 80% of our wages for being good at home? If they said who wants to stay at home for the next two months on 80% pay and your job is safe to come back to, there would be a lot of hands go up .Williaal2 wrote:Its 3 weeks because by then the govt will have banned all non essential business, not just retail, so royal mail will be delivering nothing but mail for other essential businesses.SSkUNkY wrote:'If the Government doesn’t accept our offer, in THREE WEEKS we will have to look again at our support for the key worker status.'
