Is full time guaranteed some day?
I’ve heard the average time to become full time is 3 years at my office. I’m just wondering if absolutely everyone gets offered full time and is it compulsory that they will offer it to you when youre next on waiting list?

Nope, you could literally work for the company for 35 years, and a continual flow of transfers with more seniority could nab all the FT duties. Or duties could just disappear and become part-time.
Also, nobody will be made Full-time any longer. 35 hours is as big a contract as you can get now, because the Union got monumentally outplayed with the Shorter working week (SWW) debacle.

What I mean is is it just based on seniority alone? Or can they take their pick who they want to male full time. I’d take 35 hours over what I’m doing nowMurdoch wrote:Nope, you could literally work for the company for 35 years, and a continual flow of transfers with more seniority could nab all the FT duties. It should be based on seniority, most senior part timer will be offered it first. We have full timers with less than a year at RM due to a massive turnover of staff and plenty not wanting full time.

There has never been a problem in our DO regarding moving staff up to full time although we are probably relatively small. One postie is transferring to the South coast so we have one full time vacancy at the moment. Another postie who isn't very well is also not coming back so then we will have two full time vacancies.

It seems to boil down to how your own particular Delivery Office is working. Sometimes there's a Freeze on Recruiting, and no one seems to move for years... then something changes and all the PTers are offered FT (which happened in my DO about 6 years ago). Previous to that all PTers had been stuck on their contracts for about 6 years.
If you are desperate for a FT job, and need those hours, you might be better off looking around for something more suitable. Some Posties hang on for years hoping things will get better for them, and unfortunately they never do. I know it's a very stressfull situation.
There doesn't really seem to be any logic to it. I'd suspect that RM Higher Management had some cunning plan .... but I don't think they're that clever ... just incompetent!

The situation has changed and it sounds like RM is going to attempt to stop us replacing like with like in terms of duty hours. Our newest postie is on four full days and he would like to increase up to the five full days so he will switch over and we will advertise the four full day duty. It then sounds like they are pushing to get a thirty hour duty to replace the other 38 hour duty that is soon about to be vacant. This will not work especially as that duty has officially been timed as being too long and there would not be time for us to prep the delivery for a 30 hour duty to do it.Celgar wrote:There has never been a problem in our DO regarding moving staff up to full time although we are probably relatively small. The best part timers can hope for full time hours is a reduction in the working week for full timers!

Only problem with that is that the amount of work we have to do has stayed the same or increased. But the union are trying to reduce the amount of time we have to do the job while at the same time hopefully looking to increase the amount of duty hours for part timers who are expected to do prep unpaid.k979aaa wrote:The best part timers can hope for full time hours is a reduction in the working week for full timers!

I believe it's common practise for DOMs to try and replace a FTer that leaves with someone on less hours ...... or not replace them at all!Celgar wrote: The situation has changed and it sounds like RM is going to attempt to stop us replacing like with like in terms of duty hours. Depends on the office. I got offered full time after 2 months. Although I haven’t seen anyone else get it as quickly.

A job or prep or walk should be feasible if not ask the manager to show how it is in your presence I don't take their word for it anymore they do anything for a BONUS!Celgar wrote:Only problem with that is that the amount of work we have to do has stayed the same or increased.
