Royal mail Changes- Are the union adapting?

Post by Celgar »

When I first listed the proposed changes to our previous DOM the first comment made was 'two tier workforce'. We all have to wake up and smell the coffee. They are looking to sideline us and get rid of letters any way they can manage it. We either take a stand fairly soon or this supposedly very well paid job isn't going to be around by the end of the year.

I have no issue but a lot of people do.
My only worry is RM limits to union action. We all seen what happend with the miners, British Leyland and the Steel industry. Ineos petrochemicals staged a walk out and they threatened to close it back in 2013. We are already getting more holidays than most jobs, and pretty well paid for the work we do. I fear that employee greed is going to cost some of us our jobs at one point or another. Any thoughts?

The only employee greed that I see is certain individuals running around duties to get finished early and/or claim overtime.

There seems to be a mindset amongst some of the population that we should be grateful for whatever we get in terms of employment. "It's tough times, so you just have to accept what's given". I can understand that and it's true we should be grateful. I am. I try to do the job in a way that justifies the wage.

At the same time I feel 'the pinch' from greedy bastards in top management positions who claim exorbitant salaries at the expense of the overworked, over-scutinised and quite likely stressed workforce.

So perhaps you could change your statement to employer greed rather than employee greed. Any thoughts?

4 years. I have experienced the ugly side of strike action in other industries, that's my concern. Its an opinion based on experience with capitalism and change. Money talks.

Not much change here really. Is it being run like a company. Management culture is completely unchanged. If you have had someone who has 20 years as a manager and another 10 to go their attitude to everything is fixed and will never change. Most are the laziest people in the building who resort to force and intimidation. All stage 1 issued automatically, ignore bullying, call at peoples houses when off sick. Long term grievances still ongoing, blame culture. No change at all. Run like a company, I don't see it. People sent out for an hour to pick up a pizza, mates come in 45 minutes late and take extra breaks. Special deals on workload, tasks, allowances. Managers getting no acting payment or coaches working as managers? how do you tell who is a manager and who isn't??? Nineteen managers with only 90 postman means more supervision than school children.

There's more chance of DO staff still having jobs once RM's strategy plays out, if letters are got rid off and parcels are automated then that's probably well over half of jobs in MCs gone

Rico and his cohorts are not running the company successfully, they are not generating new profit and services, instead they are asset stripping (and the profit from that is drying up) and borrowing to pay dividends and this is bad news for everyone. I agree costs need to be controlled and I have no problem with that but it is taking too long to sort out and it is because RM foolishly doesn't want to work with the CWU. Paying someone to be sat at home after delivery is not sustainable and it will go when clocking in/out comes in. Pay will be decided automatically by combining the clocking in/out system and PDA's. Being a runner is not efficient to the business if the runner is sat at home, if the runner is working and doing more using their contractual hours then this is fine and this is the path RM will go down.

Don't be fooled by this £1.8b investment cobblers, most of this money will go to shareholders dividends, the company needs to work with the Union or it will fail.

It takes two to tango, it also takes two to fall out. Yes the union leaders need to compromise so does RM it’s us on the ground who will lose out, the union leaders will still get paid during a strike while others will find dept collector’s knocking. Carry on like this and I wonder which European postal service buys us out with euro money....

Once these strikes start they are going to come thick and fast and go on a long time. We have a greedy management and a union stuck in the 1970's. In the end...the company is renationalised to save the universal service, then mail centres and distribution sold off to the highest bidders, leaving delivery in government hands. Well done Rico and cwu. We are just pawns in the middle, sadly.

I can only speak from my experience regarding the two tier workforce problem. When i started and many others , we did not walk in on our first day and go "oh im in the part timer group". We were made very aware of that fact.
The two tier workforce is not whether you are part time or full time as both still get paid the same per hour roughly.
The second tier will likely be the staff working in the three new super hubs and maybe the staff doing the later parcel deliveries in the late afternoon and evening. They will likely be paid far less or maybe employed on fake self employment like the other courier firms and 'gig economy' companies use.
