Worse job in the winter :-)

Well today was pretty bad. Out in sleet rain for 5 hours with a temp of around 4 degs c. Not ideal. Seems people who have tried the job know it also.

Do you or someone you know have to work outside in the cold winter months? What do they do for a living? Let us know a little about the person and the job they do in the comment section below.

Here are some of the worst jobs that we think people can have in the winter months....

1. Mail carrier

2. Construction Worker

3. Tow Truck driver

4. Any delivery person

5. Toll Booth Collector

It was a terrible day weather wise, made 10 times worse though by the ineffectual uniform we have to wear, especially the absymal stormproof (haha) coat and the pda which hates the rain even more than us, mine crashed about 7 times today.

Felt sorry for the lad in the white van delivering parcels today. No storm proof jacket for him looking desperately cold running in and out of the van.

Also had to smile at the young apprentice digging a hole for the local water company while his mentor went for a walk to look at the fish in the river! At least the boy was well waterproofed better than me I suspect!

This has definitely been the worst Autumn period I've known in 18 years on the job, for about 6 weeks now it's either been torrential downpours and gales or dry but bloody freezing,

Although it's rained several times recently, it's not been too bad delivering in the rain. I can tolerate it as long as it isn't bucketing down. Not been too cold either....

It's the colder months of January and February that are going to be more testing.

I'll throw what I've done in here, used to be a commercial diver specialising In ship repair.
Spent a lot of years in Antwerp, Amsterdam, Rotterdam ports.
Emergency ship repair results in 20 or 30 hour shifts in the dead of winter.
As we are not going deep, time underwater can be hours.
Many times I was in the early stages of hypothermia.
Its not pleasant, initial physical shaking is extremely violent, that's when we knew to call surface and "bug out"
Yes it was well paid but after 10 years I binned it. f**k diving.

The good days far outweigh the bad in my opinion. ok, really hot days or days like the one described above are not ideal but it's only temporary, you get home dry out shower and back to normal again. Even on the bad days it's better than being stuck in an office or factory. Maybe it takes a special breed. I guess that's why we humans are all different, so each can find employment that suits. When it's really shitty, i just think of all the friends i've known that have passed away and how much they would love to be walking in the rain and cold, gotta always look on the bright side ,as monty python would say.

Retired Postman.
It,s bloody hell sat near the fire with a warm cup of coffee, rubbing my poor old legs, still aching from years of trudging up and down streets, sat watching the rain beat against the window, and often waking up abruptly in the middle of the night thinking that I have to go out and do another 8 hour shift. A nightmare.
Only kidding. Feel sorry for you lads and lasses. Wet , windy and cold definitely the worse conditions to do your job in. Mind you most of my time was on a bike and trying to push that around for 3 to 4 hours especially in snow and slush, trying to stop the wheels from sliding was also pretty grim. Those new pull trolleys used to fly around a bit in the snow as well.

I'm still in shorts ,I do wonder whether I'll get problems later in life but today in the cold rain wet trousers no better .
Trudging around in waterproof trousers seems such a drag

However Wet & Cold it gets you can just console yourself that at the end of the day you can go home, have a Nice Hot Shower, put your Onesy on and relax with a Nice Hot cup of something! :thumbup

I spend many years Soldiering, and at the end of a Cold & Wet Day you often just faced a Cold & Wet Night ... often in the same Wet Kit ... still managed to have a Nice Hot Cup of Tea most of the time though. :cuppa
