I've said for a long time what's really holding this company back is the piss poor level of management.

They come in four versions.

The arsonist/firefighter. This guy will cause problems just to solve problems, the type of manager who will move 6 people about where one will do and then look for praise for his organisational skills.

The zombie/floor polisher This one usually picks up the trays and pushes yorks around while dragging his feet across the floor. Typically counting down to retirement.

The new sheriff in town Just out of Uni, insecure and full of self doubt but overcompensating by trying to sack someone in the first week, trying to apply theoretical physics to sticking letters through a hole in a door.

Mr Old Skool started as a telegram boy but hasn't done a delivery since 1991, doesn't believe a word anyone says because he knows better and anyone taking more than 2 hours to do a delivery is taking the piss.

Anybody any more?

We have one that's never done the job and never understands why a duty you don't know would take you longer. Its just pushing paper through a door right?

The one who realises that a happy workforce is an efficient workforce. S/he is always ready to listen to the advice of the workforce and is willing to stand up to higher management to defend his/her decisions.
S/he will go the extra mile for the workers knowing that they will go the extra mile when asked.

Got to say that new managers are dumber and very immature compared to the past. The graduate ones have no advantage over non graduate, may as well scrap that scheme. Royal Mail needs a real training programme of three months rather than just shadowing for three years. Above all intensive vetting is needed to weed out the sociopaths, sadists and narcissists before giving them £34000 this year, next year and the year after that.

They should be ex-postman, do so many months as an acting manager learning all the stuff about being a manager before they can be a substantive manager. Ok they may be s**t at it but at least they'll understand the job of those that they're managing

We had one manager who had just started and she said that she doesnt know what people complain about she did a Sunday paper round when she was 13 and it was dead easy. She also said when a rep challenged her about something that she is a manager i tell you to jump and you should ask how high ? She lasted about a month before being moved on.

I would say the complete opposite is true. It's the managers job to lead the workforce, support, encourage and ensure they work as a team. It's what they get paid for in any company. A bad manager will get the opposite with unhappy staff, unwilling staff.
