Government's former top QC rules in favour of Royal Mail as unions cry foul
Hand picked no doubt...
A judge who worked for the government for seven years and made a series of key Brexit-related rulings this year blocked the pre-Christmas postal strike today.
Mr Justice Swift, top right, who grew up in Essex and was educated at Southend-on-Sea High School for Boys, studied law at Oxford and Cambridge Universities.
He was called to the Bar in 1989 and became a QC in 2010.
From 2007 to 2014 he was the Government's top lawyer, known as the 'Treasury Devil', representing Labour and Tory administrations.
He became a High Court judge in 2018.
Anti-Brexit QC Jolyon Maugham caused a row earlier this year after calling Mr Justice Swift pro-Government' ahead of a Brexit legal challenge he was spearheading.
Mr Maugham was one of the group of remainers including Gina Miller who won the Supreme Court case that deemed Boris Johnson's lengthy prorogation of Parliament unlawful.
But lawyers rushed to defend the judge, saying it was wrong to suggest his was not impartial.
In January the judge ruled against Vote Leave bringing a High Court challenge against the Electoral Commission just hours before MPs prepared to vote down Theresa May's deal.
