Bosses at Royal Mail are recruiting a scab workforce of thousands to try and break a coming national strike.

CWU union members have discovered adverts for more than 6,000 temporary Royal Mail jobs at workplaces right around the country.

A previous agreement between Royal Mail and the union means they now have to spend two weeks considering the outcome of talks with an external mediator. But as the CWU’s London Division said, the scabbing operation is “proof that Royal Mail didn’t want to reach an agreement.”
They added that the jobs are “not only to try and break any potential strike, but also a clear indication of their intention and long term aim to recruit an alternative, cheaper workforce to deliver parcels.”
Chief executive Rico Back now wants to break up Royal Mail into a parcels delivery company run for profit, and a letters company that will be run down. Packages would instead be delivered later in the day and sorted separately from letters in special automated parcels “hubs”... said the plan would “crucify jobs if they get away with it”. It would mean taking vital work out of Royal Mail, with new parcels delivery drivers employed on much worse pay and conditions... the working hours advertised for scab drivers—later than a usual delivery worker’s shift—were a sign that bosses are already pushing ahead.“Significantly these are advertised as 11am-7pm shifts. That’s the alternative workforce delivering parcels in the afternoon,” he said.
...the move shows bosses aren’t going to back down and make an agreement following the strike vote
Royal Mail workers will have to take hard-hitting action.

Seeing as they they normally recruit 19,000 for Christmas then 6,000 is probably just the start of that process. Hardly think that 6,000 strikebreakers are going to help if 100,000 are out on industrial action. Think maybe people have seen these adverts and put 2+2 together and come up with 5.

I agree but they won't be doing anything like that, I'd guess they'll be shifting parcels to town addresses.

I've seen quite a few new faces in the last few weeks. I do wish the company wouldn't treat new staff like canon fodder. They will be thrown in at the deep end not knowing the round that they are on and will probably still be out there working when I'm getting ready for bed. Just hope they claim all that overtime they will be doing,it's one thing to try and make a good impression on your boss,but it's quite another not to know your true worth.

We're playing straight into their hands by striking. It gives them the ideal opportunity to blame us for the break up of the company.

This is a private company we're dealing with. They can do whatever they want and still have the law on their side.

Up to and including sacking the lot of us.

Unfortunately, in this country that seems to be the case with private companys. They get away with murder. But being one of the few still with a union, we should fight tooth and nail to make sure our rights are protected, for as long as we can.

Can't say I'm celebrating RM getting this fine to be honest, management incompetence is not a cause for celebration and
the fine won't come out of Rico's pockets that's for sure. And if the quote (below) from the BBC website is to be believed
I'm not sure I disagree with what RM were doing (even if it was against competition rules/law). Why shouldn't RM charge
these mail companies an appropriately higher price where WE and I mean us, the posties on the ground deliver THEIR mail
