Bit of a rant/query regarding "cutting off".
I've been a part-time reserve postie for a few months now. Got in this morning to find that I was van-sharing with a fellow part-timer and that neither of us had any experience of the walks to which we had been assigned - considered to be two of the longer walks covered by our DO. Unsurprisingly, management didn't seem too interested when this was brought to their attention. Neither of the walks had been fully prepped, meaning that we were still sorting our mail while most of the other posties were heading out on delivery.
With some persuasion, management eventually agreed that we could leave some of our oversize parcels behind and we eventually left the office at quarter to ten. By half one it became apparent that we wouldn't be in a position to complete the final two loops within our duty time. I called the office and was berated by management for not advising them of this sooner. How early should I be letting them know if I cannot complete and intend to "cut off"? I wasn't familiar with the walk and didn't really know how long the remaining loops would take. Had I called any sooner and told them I couldn't get it done, surely it would have looked as though I was taking the p*ss!

Firstly the walks should have been up to speed before you guys came in. The manager should've either had one of you in early or get a full timer to prep it. Ideally the managers prefer you to tell them what your leaving before you tie up so maybe leaving a few packets AND a loop is probably what you shouldve told them as you cannot complete in your time. They cannot make you work over and if everyone did this that gets shafted then the manager will think twice and get someone to get it upto speed for you.

Ignore the nuts and bolys of whaat should have been done. At the point at which the frame is set up for bagging up, you must find and speak to the line manager in charge and explain that you don not think you will be able to complete the delivery on time. He/she then can either present a remedy (taking parcels off/leaving a loop in etc) that will reduce your workload. You can either agree that is sufficient to enable you to finish on time, or, if not, arrange a time with the lino to phone up and inform them of your progress at that time and whether you will be OK or you will need to bring mail back. This is the correct procedure, not often followed in my experience,

And watch your boss implode at this point it’s hilarious!,trust me,this is exactly the correct procedure but if you implement it watch out!they hate it,because they have to manage it and call on there minions to bail them out,if they haven’t already finished and gone home.redneck wrote:Ignore the nuts and bolys of whaat should have been done. Manager got it wrong, he should have told you to leave more. Not your fault. I would have made it clear that I was dropping everything at 2.40 to get back for 2.50 and finish at 3.00. Would he like me to ring him at any point? Let him decide everything except your finish time.grumpazoid wrote: With some persuasion, management eventually agreed that we could leave some of our oversize parcels behind and we eventually left the office at quarter to ten.
