If someone suffers from ibs (irritable bowel syndrome) what is the royal mail policy on this?
For example, is it classed as a "disability".
Any cases /examples of how this is dealt with?

There are only a few conditions which are automatically considered a disability under the Equality Act.

Cancer, including skin growths that need removing before they become cancerous
A visual impairment - this means you’re certified as blind, severely sight impaired, sight impaired or partially sighted
Multiple sclerosis
An HIV infection - even if you don't have any symptoms
A severe, long-term disfigurement - for example severe facial scarring or a skin disease

However all other conditions, again except for a few, are covered because they meet the definition set out in section 6 of the Equality Act 2010.

It says you’re disabled if:

you have a physical or mental impairment
that impairment has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on your ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities.

IBS could fall under this clause but would be dependant on the symptoms.

For Royal Mail, a reasonable adjustment would be a duty with reasonable access to toilet facilities.

Just in case anyone was wondering the conditions which are not covered by the EA are
hayfever
tattoos or piercings
voyeurism or exhibitionism
a tendency to set fire to things
a tendency to steal things
a tendency to physically or sexually abuse others

I have fibromyalgia and it can have lots of symptoms , one of which is ibs.

Get an oh assist referral and you should be considered covered under the equalities act and as such hopefully you’ll have a reasonable adjustment of having access to a toilet.

If it’s you that has it , I feel your pain , it’s so unpredictable and really stressful at times.

They sound more like the mandatory skills required for line managers
