Being sent to another DO

Morning all,

I’m looking for clarification on being sent to another DO. It’s my rest day today and have just received a text message from the manager that I will be required to work at another DO for the week. To be clear, I have no problem with this, it’s in my contract.

The issue I have is the DO is 22 miles away. Besides the fact that my car is currently off the road I wouldn’t use my car anyway as I only have commute insurance which specially states ‘one Permanent place of work’. To get there on public transport will take 2 hours and 35 minutes. The Manager has requested I be there for 8.30am.

Now I have been told by colleagues if I am sent to another DO that I turn up at my start time at my usual DO and they have to get me there, however the last time this happened I had a row from the manager who argued that this is not the case and he contacted HR who informed him that it’s down to me to get there and to start at the other office at my start time.

Obviously everyone will have an opinion on this but what I’m looking for is solid written guidance if it exists?

I would ring HR myself not take the word of a manager, this subject has appeared elsewhere, pretty sure you attend your office at your start time and it is up to management to get you to the other office and to get you back to your own office at your normal finish time. Are you not in the union, rep should be able to clarify this.

Working in nearby offices –

Areas will identify and agree with the CWU locally a approach (which could include the use of volunteers and reserves) to working in nearby offices within employees’ contracted hours which will include travel times and appropriate travel and subsistence arrangements.

That means travel to and from the other office IS included in your DUTY time, not your COMMUTE.

It also means that they provide a Van, or pay for travel between the two office.

This issue has come up too many times. It is the responsibility of RM to get you there and bring you back within duty time. To my mind every DO should have it's own contingent of staff to cover all the walks.
