lapsing and parcels more important than 1st class letters

Can anyone tell me why Yorks of 1st class mail are left behind in the Delivery Office when the van is late from the mail Centre and we are told to concerntrate on Parcels and lapsing as they are more important?

Because they are late arriving and it could jeopardise the deliveries being able to finish within their hours if they stayed behind and sorted said items. Managerial decision, don’t worry yourself so.

There's no such thing as 1st and 2nd class in DOs, the difference between the two is built into when they're shipped from the outward MC to the inward MC

Yes it's because the managers get a smacked botty if they fail parcels and they really don't want to be out doing lapsing when they are in the middle of a season on football manager.

If whole or significant parts of walks are not delivered then the DOM and everyone above them gets in trouble. So if leaving some mail til the next day enables all walks to be delivered then when the **** hits the fan this is the choice that is made. Wouldn't usually be specifically first class mail though. Far more likely to be some kind of large mail out going to all or a lot of addresses. Examples of this could be national trust magazines, council mailouts, or other catalogue type stuff.
