Advice please ?

Post by prowler »

Drivers in my office are now being utilised to take out part walks which have failed on a Saturday. This is on top of their normal duties i.e you work to your time.
In order to acheive this they are now failing parcels/packets assigned to these duties.
I understand this is also happening in adjacent offices, resulting in massive parcels/packets backlogs.
So walkholders are working job and finish and drivers are not in that they are having
'flexibility' forced on them.
Is this not harassment?I can't see how one group of people should be treated differently
from the rest.
They know that many walkholders finish early but are turning a blind eye to it.
Is this happening in other offices as well?
Any advice from CWU reps welcome, or has this union totally capitulated?

 It's very hard to advise another unit .. with limited facts .. but it sounds like your dom is trying the old 'divide & conquor' routine. On what you've said .. yes it is discrimination. It goes back to the basic 'Do the job properly'! It sounds like .. similar to my office .. you still have some muppets .. who would sell their own mothers .. to 'make time'! Contact your rep .. in a group. If disatisfied with that .. contact your Area Delivery rep & Equal Ops Rep. If necessary by-pass the lot & scream at 'Division'. IF drivers & footmen .. did the job properly .. there would be no time to assist in 'flexability'. Please try & remember .. if a CWU member .. YOU are the union!

I did actually e-mail my branch HQ a couple of weeks ago - still waiting for a reply!
SCOTLAND NO 5, are you there? :Boo hoo!
Office rep does not seem to be able to deal with it.
I just wondered if this was happening elsewhere.
And yes the muppets fly out the door like lemmings on Saturday! :left:

same thing happens in my office all drivers must report back and any walks or packets must be taken out or up until your time, a bit unfair as the residential guys are still job and finish

I must be stupid, but is this not a clear case of discrimination.

 Yes old mate .. as I stated .. it is! I just question the dom's motives in taking this action. Let's face it .. there has always been a little bit of .. ahem .. friendly rivalry :left: .. ahem .. between foot-men & drivers & to me -- this is a clear attempt to get you at one & others throats thus proving that you are all making time! The Royal Mail has saved £1000's over the years in NOT having to employ the services -- of 'Work & Efficiency' consultants. Enough is enough .. it is time to 'Do the job properly' & to work to your times. If just YOU .. at your unit .. start working with a view to showing that nothing more .. can be expected of you .. then it is a start.

This is not a local action .. as my Outer London unit is similarly affected. This is coming from above. I fully understand your frustration .. but all a fight about discrimination .. with muppets joining in .. may cause .. is that your unit will fall into the trap of proving the the R.M's point. Good luck - that is a hard one .. to judge.

I would say not discrimination. I would say that is delay of mail in the form of packets in favour of DSA items. Should you be recalled or not allowed to load packets in favour of mail, then that is acceptable as an ad hoc arrangement anything more than that is a change of duty. How is a walking postman supposed to get from A to B? as a matter of interest. You are merely being asked to work to your time. Some of us work to our time every single shift.

Having said that, mail has always had precedence and if someone who does a duty daily finishes early then it is a managers problem and for him to deal with it - not for you to bring it to their attention. If you don't like your duty because you can't get finished early ask for a change.

I don't have a problem working to my time and never have done.In fact I've never agreed with job and finish as that's what has got us to where we are now.
I DO have a problem working to my time when others don't have to.
With regard to parcels and packets, are we not supposed to be providing a service?
Are the public aware that these items(many first class) are sitting in DO's for a week or more whilst DSA and normal mail gets priority?
Part of my duty is delivering packets/parcels, so if I'm delivering mail instead, that must be a change of duty - totally unagreed.

This would not happen at our office,we had 3 walks not go out yesterday, weve got 4 drivers whose firms are mostly closed on saturdays so they just do packets, parcels and reg, they then do a mid day collection. The only way they would be doing these walks is on overtime if they wanted to,if our dom done what yours did then he would know about it this week on them 4 firms deliverys.Nothing worse then loads of firms on the phone complaining about not getting ther work.

The problem here is visibilty. Drivers have to come back to return vehicles. It unjust. Postmen just go home.

this has been happening in our office for months certainly all through last summer we had piles and piles of packets and parcels not delivered for 2 weeks at one point some were being delivered with posting dates of 3 weeks we were told packets and parcels arnt subject to the uso but letters are so drivers were used for walks and the parcels left
when we complained were told that there going to take weeks out of annual leave this year so there is more staff to cover for the summer months what this boils down to is that they have stripped all the hours out of the office and all it needs is 1 to go sick and there fu cked and the packets and parcels are the first casualties
