Transfering

Post by Jamesfr3man »

Hi all,

Recently joined RM and am really enjoying it for the most part. Been in the job about month and a bit and want to move to a closer DO. I spend most of my commute in stand still traffic where as I could be walking to work the other OD is so close. I've looked online and on here and understand that I should use SuccessFactors but It’s my understanding that only works for people who have been in the job for a while. I've spoken to the manager at the other DO and there are vacancies at the office. Should I hand my notice in and reapply? I know it’s risky and sounds dumb but I can't see any other way of doing it.

Another factor is my current DOM and other full timers don't treat part timers such as myself particularly well e.g. forcing absorptions on us making us go over our time, giving us HCT rounds with no prior knowledge of the walk, moaning at us that we come in at a later time to full timers and thus are late finishing, generally talking down to us and treating us poorly. I want to move but I don't want to rise suspicions as my DOM could torpedo my chances if I reapply out of spite :arrrghhh
I don't really want to continue working at my current DO for this reason. I really enjoy this job but the way they treat new people baffles me. It’s my understanding that before me quite a number of part timers have quit and now, I know why... :cry

If anyone has any advice, I would appreciate it

Bullying & Transfering

Post by clashcityrocker »

It is a point that Terry should bear in mind - a lot of bullying that goes on in a DO is blue on blue.
The other office might be no different.

It is a long time since I applied but I didn't think you could stipulate what office you want to work in.
You simply apply to join RM.
If your current office has a lot of vacancies then leaving and reapplying might just see you back in the same office?

Talk to the DOM at the one you want to transfer to.
If he wants you he might be able to arrange something less official than Successfactors.

If you get the chance, work your day off in the closer office.
He gets to know you, you get to know them.
If it is a case of out of the frying pan....at least you'll know what to expect.

Good advice from Clash speak to dom at office you wish to transfer too[see if there is currently any vaccanies] as going through official channels takes ages;don't give up your current position but make it known that you are prepared to cover for the office you are interested in moving too,in mean time try to rise above all the silly bullying/hassle,you shouldn't have to put up with that sort of behaviour if it gets any worse speak to your union rep.

I've spoken to some of the lads that work in the other DO and they all seem really friendly including the DOM, but I understand what you’re saying about how it could be the same. I've spoken to the DOM at the other DO and he's happy to "pluck" my name from a list if I apply but there is no definite assurance I'll get the job, so I could be voluntarily quitting for nothing. What I need to know is if there are any ramifications to quitting and re-joining? Won't RM just look at my application and say "he was in that other DO for about 2 months and quit now he's reapplied, why should we give him a job if he's just going to quit" I would love to do this officially but the current channels won't allow me

Unfortunately, my current DO union rep is known as the "ghost" as he's never in and I've never met him or been told his name. I know there are positions available at the DO I want to go to as a number of posties have retired so I've been told. I'm just worried about the logistics of quitting and being rehired. I'll have to give back all my uniform and get a new payroll number etc. not to mention how it will look from a managers POV.

Definitely don't quit. Get on good terms with the DOM in the office you want to transfer to and you'll eventually get your transfer.

It took me months to get mine forced through unofficially, but it is worth the wait. Get to know your area union rep if your local rep isn't any help.

If you quit and reapply you probs wont be shortlisted for interview. Ultimately its HR that make the appointments of new staff, so the DOM wouldn't be able to guarantee you anything.

When you say "took me months to get mine forced through unofficially" what do you mean? How did you achieve this? Also I've talked to two other posties specifically in my DO about it and they have been trying to transfers for years but have been unsuccessful due to our DOM refusing to let them leave because of how under staffed our DO is, due to all the part timers quitting. Those guys are full time and have been there for years trying to get out, what chance do I have... :hmmmm

The OPG is right about not quitting, you are entirely in the hands of some faceless bureaucrat in HR as to whether you get shortlisted for the new job, and with a track record of quitting in 2 months (which is the position you'd be in) they would almost certainly not shortlist you.
One glimmer of hope is that there are few, if any full-time jobs advertised nowadays, this might well be why none of the older posties at your DO have got a transfer, since the new DOM can't take them unless they go to a part-time contract, they'd probably tried to transfer as Full-Timers. You being part-time already would slot into a vacancy. So don't give up hope, stick at it and as the guys say, get to know the new DOM as he can help you.
Unfortunately it might be that you have to be a bit devious and start cutting off every day, take your break in the morning while your FT partner is spitting blood waiting to get out etc.. in the end your current DOM will want to get rid of you to make his life easier. It's sad that we have to think like this but the ends might justify the means.

I forgot to mention that the DOM at the DO I want to work at told me to apply for the position online while I'm employed with RM and then hand my notice in once he was aware of my application because there was no way I could transfer. He then told me he could give me the job if I give him my name, and he could “pick” me from a list once I was on it. Is he super wrong? Based on what you guys have said I assume this is super wrong…

'Hand your notice in.....' - he's taking the p**s.......online job applications can appear, people apply for them and then they suddenly disappear
because of budget issues, office re-organisation etc. What happens if you resign and the role disappears.......

Your DOM doesn't want anyone to leave which is why its so difficult. So if you had someone who was willing to swap offices :hmmmm Maybe you could advertise this on their office noticeboards, could that potentially be win-win??

Its getting to the stage in Royal Mail where we are having to do everything ourselves. Even if we want a day off or a week off when we want it these days, we have to find someone to swap with.

Unless they've changed it. After six months you can apply anywhere there is a vacancy, that's what I did. Dom did try to stop/delay it, all I did was phone hr and they forced transfer through after 28 days. They want to treat you like dirt, you owe them nothing.
Wouldn't quit though, the whole application process is very complicated and could take months and months if ever.

AS per previous Posts....... DO NOT QUIT :no no It effects Pension & Seniority, and even a couple of weeks seniority might be needed in the future if there's a Re-Pick of Duties, in whatever Office. :hmmmm

Most points already covered, just apply online , be patient and keep in touch with your "New" DOM and try and get him to hurry things up. The situation you are in is: You're "OLD" DOM doesn't want a manpower shortage, because it makes His Life difficult.... Your "NEW" DOM already has a manpower shortage , and therefore already has a difficult life! So whose interest is it to get you a move? On one transfer I had to wait until I'd heard on the "Grapevine" that there was a vacancy at the DO I wanted to transfer to. When i asked my current DOM why he hadn't informed me (because he knew I was trying to transfer) he said, "Well you'd need to Transfer Offices" I thought "Well No s**t Sherlock" He didn't want to tell me because it would have left him short, it's that simple. If there's nothing in it for them they'tr not interested. :no no

I've always wondered why RM have guys from the next Town working in your DO, and guys in your Town have to travel to the next to work. This Company is totally incomprehensible. :arrrghhh Good Luck with your Transfer. :cuppa

I got a transfer to a closer depot before I even started the job!

Here's how it was done...

I applied to every job going within a 20mile radius of my home

Got an interview at the furthest away

I already knew the manager at the depot I'm at now and he had a member of staff that wanted a transfer to where I got the job

So the managers from both depots got their heads together & did a swap

It was that easy!

Hope that helps

This is a one in a million scenario though (with all due respect).

One of the lads at our place wanted a transfer to Nottingham - he got it OKd straight away, it took RM six months to actually release him to there.
