Why ?

Everyone new there was going to be a very hot spell of weather approaching including the union and royal mail.why didn't they arrange mail to arrive at sorting offices earlier get staff in early on sorting and deliver 7am until 12pm this heat over last 2 days crazy working in that binmen and milkman starting extra early,and what do we do start normal time absolutely crazy.

Because they are a non caring bullying company run by nasty people who couldn’t give a hoot about common sense,they would have to use all there management skills to implement it,and that simply won’t do!,

yep crazy, plus to be still given absorption and then wonder why sick record is high, would think caring company at the very least would have absorption covered. the job has changed

Physically impossible, the mail doesn't arrive at inward MCs early enough for that to be possible. With the high temperatures the sorting machines have a habit of partially or fully shutting themselves down (or the computer crashes) from overheating so the mech takes longer to run and the work goes out later to DOs. If a CSS machine has to be rebooted, whatever batch was being run has to be started again from scratch

You couldnt have worded it better,but the saddest thing is they couldnt give a toss. But as Ive said before what goes around comes around

Fire Service, Police Force, Builders and the list goes on and on. Do they moan about the heat no they get on with their jobs.

If you cant stand the heat leave

No such attitude in our delivery office. Managers / DOM very helpful in every way. I know some time our staff take advantage of kind management..... honest .. that's the truth.

I’m happy to hear that,what’s the secret?does he tell his boss it’s my office and I will run it as I see fit?
does he not get grief from above with overtime,lapsing loaning etc?

It is an outdoor job but that does not mean that the business can waive away its duty in making sure that the welfare and health of its employees is protected. Working five to six hours in the heat of the midday and afternoon sun without providing regular breaks of reasonable length and providing rehydration facilities is a dereliction of their duty of care. Particularly when record temperatures are being experienced. They should have a plan to deal with such occurrences and if they haven't then they are leaving the business open to legal proceedings. Another dereliction of their duty and I would imagine a matter of gross misconduct. The union should be coming down heavy on them.

I delivered mail when it was minus 15C and now 30C. I have done on bike and in van. No issue . Its outside job that what you get ... and if you can not do it why did you join delivery side of it ? Have a inside job in Mail Centre.

I think people are more concerned about the lack of reasonalbe administrative intervention to safeguard the workforce against these more frequent weather changes.
Theres no reasonable interventions put in place when we experience these extremes in weather.
Putting a/c in both vans and offices would help reduce the risk of heat exhaustion over the course of the day. Extra water coolers to make sure everyone can get cold water prior to going out on delivery. Giving people the option to split shift or come in earlier depending on a local agreement would be also beneficial to some. Likewise, cancelling lapsing would also reduce peoples fatigue giving people the scope to go slower or take more frequent refreshment breaks. Giving people the option to seek shade as they then have the time in their day in order to do this.
Over all it's just respecting what staff are having to endure on days like this and making sure people are safe and working in reasonable conditions without pushing people to go above and beyond what is reasonable in the conditions.
I appreciate that everyone is individual and can tolerate different conditions. Personally I would rather deliver in the extreme cold than the extreme heat. I always run hot and can be quite happy in shorts and a shirt down to freezing temperatures. Others are wrapped up in 5 layers. These differences are not acknowledged by RM and this is why people are pissed that nothing is being put into place.
