Pepper spray for dogs

Does anyone use pepper spray for aggressive dogs? What's Royal Mails policy on this. They should provide every postie on delivery a canister of this IMO.

I have been bitten 3 times in 2 years. In each case I would not have had time to get a can out and spray it so not sure how much use it would be even if it was policy. maybe we need body armour

Pretty sure it's illegal for the public to carry or use pepper spray. In fact there are very few things you are permitted to carry in the UK for self defence.

There a some defensive sprays on the market that are legal, not sure how effective they'd be for dogs. I think their main purpose is to identify rapists / muggers etc by covering them with dye.

Perhaps we'll get some sort of defensive object / substance after a postie gets mauled to death.

I have a vague memory of something being trialled many years ago.
It was quickly dropped as having the spray gave the postie a false sense of security whereas the speed of a dog attack rendered them effectively useless.

You stick your arm out to spray a dog you're going to lose that fight nine times out of ten. They're far too quick to react to threat and they'll probably have the can with your arm still attached to it.

Bad idea, very bad idea.

Defend, protect, retreat. Only attack if you've ran out of sensible options.

We trialed some stuff called "Bite Back" years ago , gave off a really pungent peppermint smell. It was only supposed to distract the dog by overloading its sense of smell. Don't think it really worked , as others have said you don't really get time to use it. We had the ultra sonic Dazzers to , they were a waste of time to. But it was ok for scaring squirrels off my bird table or cats sh**ing in my garden.

and if you did the owner would get very annoyed, do you think RM would back you if the owner wanted to sue you?

Yeah, any sort of spray would likely be ineffectual against a fast approaching aggressive dog.

What a spray might be useful for was if a dog locked into a bite, and wouldn't let go. That's when serious injury and death can occur. Some breeds of dogs pretty much need to be killed before they will release their grip. I've heard anecdotally, that spraying a dog with a fire extinguisher can be enough to shock it into releasing its bite. I'd rather have some sort of spray in that instance, than nothing but my bare hands.

those 'sonic dazzers' where ok,,,,if you stotted them off the dogs heed.

I think pepper spray comes under the same catagory as fire arms.

Best thing when you purchase your pepper spray to see if it's effective try it out on your Dom.
