Funnily enough, any number have asked the same question at our office! It won't happen in my opinion. It'll cost the company a fortune; any job losses will be offset by natural turnover I reckon. There must be thousands every year retire or just quit.

Yeah, truth be told. There's a lot of folk like you, that hate the way the business is going and can't wait leave.

All they have to do is turn the screw a little bit more, and loads of people will be out the door.

Since any voluntary redundancy would be given out on a seniority basis, it doesn't make sense from a business perspective to pay money for people to leave, when they have a handful of years left. The business is full of people approaching retirement age, totally baffled by all the changes that have come in since privatisation.

The first bit of advice was correct, if you want to leave, then leave. Waiting for some fantasy reason won't achieve anything.

There's supposed to be around 20,000 jobs to go over the next 4-5 years due the RM's new parcel strategy. A lot of those will go by natural wastage – leavers not being replaced.

Then you have many of the newer starters on short term contracts, who can be just shown the door when their contract comes to an end.

IHR might then be offered to those on long term sick.

They might even look at sackings in conduct cases, etc.

VR would be the most expensive way to get rid of someone and as RM is a business trying to make money, I'm sure they'll go for the cheaper option wherever possible.

Saying that, personally I would be very interested if VR came my way and I'm in a fairly healthy position both seniority wise and financially to take it! But it's not something I'm expecting or relying on.

In my opinion the only way we will see mass redundancies is if Royal Mail drop the enhanced payments and revert to statutory redundancy, that would save them millions.

I wouldn't be surprised if RM want to reduce VR payouts, as they're very generous in my opinion. But there would be a lot less volunteers if they go all the way down to statutory levels.
And they have said they'll be no compulsory redundancies.

I'm not 100% sure how much of our pay is assessed, but based on current basic of £441 per week, personally I'd get 104 weeks pay under the current system. If I got statutory redundancy it would only be the equivalent of around 25 weeks pay!

IHR will probably become more common, currently it's sometimes an option for a DO staff member to transfer to a MC if they have a health issue that prevents them from doing a walk. Over the next few years there probably won't be any sit-down jobs at MCs that aren't specialist duties so probably DO staff transferring to MCs for medical reasons won't be an option.

How can this company now in private hands throw away £30-£40 a week on so called work place coaches who arent doing anything at all week in week out for this money? Huge amount of cash wasted but thats okay eh .

Supposedly 8000 posties left last year mostly of their own accord with little financial cost to RM. Therefore it's unlikely there will be any redundancy offers available. In addition there will be more new jobs at all the LAT hubs so existing staff at DOs could choose to move to those locations which is another way to 'lose' staff from existing DOs. In other words they have it covered.

Royal mail have already said there will be voluntary redundancy opportunities in the future. There has been in the past. How people have gone since 2010. Labour costs are probably one of it's biggest costs so would benefit in the long term. I personally would take it as it suits me.

Have they? All the recent talk is 'natural wastage'. Personally I doubt that any VR packages - even if offered - would be anything like as generous as previously (I'd be ecstatic if they were but the business is in a very very different place now).

RM have always been reluctant to offer VR. They made a point of publicising how many posties left last year but also that RM are supposedly better than most firms at holding onto staff. Given the figures they know it will be easy for them to do what they want.
