Postman and cancer .

Don’t want to cause any alarm or upset but a few of us were pondering at work about postmen that had died over the years. As best We could make out various cancers had claimed the most but only one recent (ish) Melanoma.This surprised us what with the amount of exposure to sun We have.Similar in Your Office? Heart disease seems pretty low maybe due to our active working lives? Thoughts please Guys?

No deaths in my office but bodies tend to slowly fall apart due to relentlessly pounding the streets year on year.Thats a slow death in itself.

Lot of the old lads from when I first started went with lung cancer or drink related illness. But when I first started you could smoke at your fitting and the night crew all smoked like chimneys. In fact when they opened the doors at 4am the smoke would roll out. Last couple that have gone were all drink related.

The issue with cancer is catching it early and then speedy treatment by hospitals but this government are doing the same they did to royalmail ie degrade the service and f**k the customer/patient it is after all a business that will be traded as a bojo deal of the century for USA trade deal by two New Yorkers!

Look after yourselves. Some of the posties diets are horrendous at our place, I swear they live on red bull!

Doesn't go unnoticed that as the job gets harder and deliveries longer the more posties are turning to energy drinks to get through the day, how long before amphetamines take the place of energy drinks?. Worrying.

Your assertion is very specific and entirely without evidence ,unless you care to provide some,rather than just bluster and non specific waffle.

we had 3 postman who died off stomach cancer when I started, there walks and deliverys were a mile away from our local hospital and there was always a theory going around saying the wind direction blew over there walks when the chimney was lit when they used to burn all tissue after the operations years ago

. to this day we still say it was because off that and customers in the area have always said friends and family have all had cancer related illnesses makes you wonder

Wow !! Haven’t heard one like that before.As others have said there was a smoking and drinking culture mostly on our old night shifts. Having a cheap bar on site didn’t help much lol. Union meetings were like sitting in fog .I got home w- n - e -ed reeking of smoke and My misses accused Me of sneaky night clubbing lol

The oldest and most senior posties seem to be the fittest in my office, probably because they've been on the same cushy duties that haven't been altered for 30 years or more.

I was delivering a parcel to an Old postie on my round and he said, "Glad to see you're wearing a hat, make sure you use plenty of sunblock. I was in the job 30 years and now I've got Skin Cancer"!

Does make you wonder, I know we get the usual "Don't forget to wear Sun Block" Briefing every summer, but how serious are RM really taking this? Is it just the usual Lip Service that they make to cover their own arse if something goes wrong i.e "Well you were briefed on it"

Wouldn't be surprised if down the line RM start to get hit by claims for skin cancer. Surely if they took it that seriously they'd be issuing Sun Block?

Made me laugh a few years ago when they issued us cheapo water bottles and said, "Try to avoid delivering during the Heat of the Day". Yeah right we can't even get people to take a Meal Break, I'm sure they're not going to have a siesta and add a couple of hours to their day.
