Not sure if it is just my work place but I have noticed how unequal staff are treated in regards to duties and responsibilities. It seems that postmen/postwomen who can drive seem to have a lot more hassle and responsibilities (for example constantly having to sign van safety forms, responsible for more 1pm deliveries,van checks) where as non drivers are paid the exact same but dont have any stress.
Surely it is not just me that feels drivers should be on a slightly better payment?
Also the "PHG" role has responsibility for scanning and allocating special deliveries amongst other responsibilities yet is paid the same.
My point being , with more responsibilties, the increase of any mistakes is higher and therefore more likely to be pulled up.

Drivers and the old PHG grade did used to be paid an allowance but this was lost in a past agreement. A few do still receive it as a grandfather rights payment.

poor drivers they are so had done by (not) in our office they have half the amount of calls to deliver to as walking posties

I agree! Though that is the perspective from my office. The Driver and walker are pretty much equal so it certainly does mean the driver ends up doing more. It is them who signs for specials and takes responsibility for them. Not to mention it is the Driver who is at risk from accidents and what not. I know if you drive safely and to the rules then it shouldn't be a problem but life doesn't work that way. It is the driver who is exposed to the risk. Luckily my regular partner also has a licence and we will generally share driving. Im the main driver but if he's back to the Van before me he'l spin the van around if needs be and take us to our next loop or nip off and do a parcel or two. But il sometimes be with someone who doesn't drive/Refuses to and il have to do the lot.

I enjoy doing the driving but you're quite right there is more responsibility attached to the driver of the van. If your van partner drives (and is prepared to drive) then that does really help but if they don't then they just have to accept that there may be periods on busy packet days that they will stood on the street corner in the rain looking at their phone to kill time. I suppose thats why the business is now looking back at singleton big packet drivers only?

Favouritism was the most unequal and unfair practice,well it was in my old office,and until it is stamped on the job will always be unequal and unfair

I've worked at 3 different offices now and at each one there has been no difference at all in the workload between P&L drivers and their partners, they both do the same size loops and just drop any big pkts off together on their way round.

What happens if the other postie decides to drive the van while out on the round and he/she has an accident? surely it's their fault, surely the Postie who signed for the van can't get shafted for it?

No Why do You think some one has to sign for the van? Other postman has no business driving. Signing makes it yours for the day.Including accidents , speed fines etc.

Our office has a sheet and both walker and driver signs for keys. I am not and will not be responsible for my partners driving. Not in the eyes of the law or the company.

That’s what the vehicle log book is for, every time you change driver you record the mileage and who’s driving.

The PDA's could be used in such a situation.
