Nice memories

Just thought I’d start this topic to lighten the gloom and toxic stuff on here,on how lovely things were back in the day with the job,before lapsing loaning,overtime problems and management mismanagement,for me me it was delivering to a dear old little lady,sitting next to her roaring Rayburn in the middle of winter,treated to coffee and toast,and as much home grown produce as you could carry,she loved to see the postie and chat,happy days indeed,am aware this may not appeal to everyone but worth an ask?

Oh give it a rest , it was how everyone worked 20 to 30 years ago . Would you have been the only one working to 1pm back then when everyone else was home by 9.30 , get real.Its amazing how a thread on memories turns into a runners thread so quickly.

the question was asked, i answered it, yes most people finished early back then, and over time thats been slowly erased, yet people havent learned.
I think the question itself deviated the thread, so carry on with the light chat.

Took one of those 100 years birthday cards to a lady the other day, she started to cry. Meant the world to her and was just nice to deliver something to someone that you could see meant so much.

Totally agree and see where you are coming from, the time when the job was a service,not a business being destroyed by sheer greed. Sometimes the postie is the only face the old and lonely see for days,and they are so grateful for a few words,the workload is so big now you hardly have time to wave,a sad reflection,of what this once wonderful job has become.

This wasn’t intended to wind people up at all,just a thought on what nice things people remember going back 30 plus years,we also had a guy called mike,known locally as the “singing postman” and was on the local telly filmed as he sung and delivered the mail,retired a while ago now and has written a book postman patters,he had us in stitches with his stories from his deliveries,

Aww back in the day's when we were a service not a business. Can't chat to people now unless it's on your break, it'll show up on the PDA and you're gonna have to explain yourself. Job was more relaxed and certainly easier back 20 yrs. More than one packet bag put you in a bad mood lol. If you needed more than one 'contingency card' as they call them now, it was a bad day. What about not taking mailsort on a Saturday, bliss lol. Saturday was something to just be got out the way before the weekend could start, home by 10.30 on a busy one. Mind you, we worked 6 days, people tend to forget that bit.

I remember the good old days when Royal Mail provided a public service. You had time to actually talk to your customers and I don't remember ever having to use the "over-running procedure" like now.

Just be glad it was easy back then.

Us younger generation have to pay an arm and a leg for a house these days and work the full week until we retire age 92.
