Unfortunately, it's a sad indictment of todays boardroom culture. It really does seem to be about "me me me" and how much I can earn (or screw the workforce further).

I love the myth about 'new Labour' that they were somehow frugal, or Tory lite. Brown was a rabid tax and spend chancellor. An out and out socialist. He robbed pensions because he ran out of our money to spend, nothing more nothing less.

I agree with the bit about runners and early starters screwing their workmates... but to compare a postie working their day off or getting a bit of overtime some other way as somehow being as greedy and selfish as your typical fat cat CEO getting paid millions for doing next to nothing is a bit of a bizarre comparison.

I agree with the bit about runners and early starters screwing their workmates... but to describe a postie working their day off or getting a bit of overtime some other way as somehow being as greedy and selfish as your typical fat cat CEO getting paid millions for doing next to nothing is a bit of a bizarre comparison.

Reminds me of a chap at our DO who regularly tells us newbies we should only do our hours, no OT, never work our day off etc. Very easy to say when he's on a permanent 38 hour contract (or whatever it is) while we are on 12 month 25 hour contracts. I've offered on more than one ocassion to swap contracts with him.

There has to be a degree of self in today's world or you just get walked over. Never done ghost OT but if I feel like working late or am asked to work a day off, then I will if I feel right.

Having allocated leave but then being paid to work it however is very wrong and I cannot believe it goes on.

Sorry but you can blame Gordon Brown in this particular instance , we used to have the finest private pension system in the world until he got his grubby hands on it. As for capitalism , not perfect by any means , but the alternative? North Korea, Venezuela? Cuba? Nowhere has socialism and its policies worked ever.

You can't blame someone wanting to work their day off for a bit of extra money. Some people have mortgages to pay and families to keep.

Worked for Royal Mail for 18 months, worked every day plus my days off other than two days - one when I had a Saturday off, I'd not had one in a year and a half, the other when I had to have my best mate (the dog) put to sleep. Aside from this I was six days a week every week.

It never did me any harm, and as far as I was aware it never f*cked any of my work colleagues off.

People coming in early working for free or prepping d2d for free I don't understand. But working day off sometimes is necessary because the manager cuts overtime and those on part time contracts miss those hours and money when they are not there, plus with few employment opportunities in some towns and villages you have no choice but to support your family.
