Royal Mail seem to have completely eroded seniority for everything apart from Duty selection and they even attacked that with the introduction of specialist posts (interview selection) in the way forward.

We still pick duties on seniority and are now picking leave in seniority oder, but they say next year the top so many will go to the bottom and so on

to be honest,i think the question should be do you still see yourself working
for Royal Mail in 5/10 years time?
the reason i say this,as far as flexibility goes,it makes no allowance for age
or length of service,my own interpretation of seniority is, someone who's given
20 years+ should expect some concessions,and yes the senior man may well
have his pick of dutys,but if there all planned at 3.5 hours whats the benefit?
throwing walks in for A/Gs and new entrants and stood on stack for what
seems an eternity,i'm knackered before i start my fair and equal workload!
seeing how the jobs changed and looking into the crystal ball,i don't fancy
walking myself into an early grave,senior man or not.

if you did'nt have seniority the manager would give all his mates and ar-e lickers the pick of the duties but with seniority he cant in a resign

Wonder if the same applies to, say, farmers, milkmen, etc. If you're not happy, leave and find a job where you can progress up the ladder rather than doing the dead end job you currently do.

When I started I thought it was unfair that some duties were FAR easier than others, after 14years doing the job I still think it's unfair - all duties should be the same, end of.


As for seniority - two offices I've worked in and both have removed it on leave picking... Duties - already happening by a number of vacant duties in my office being left open and being classed as part-time duties so nobody can sign for them.

I'm fairly low in the pecking order re-seniority (about middle). However I have always believed that seniority is the only fair way. Firstly it stops A**e lickers getting the plum jobs. Secondly, it transcends race,sex age or whatever - it's just fair. Also, people have to remember that the top senior guys (with the "plum" walks) were once at the bottom of the food chain and have done their fair share of s**t earlier in their RM career.

Slave ....there's no fairer way than seniority belive me it's the best option as you get older and get more years under your belt your perspective will change trust me. Yes the walks should in some cases be averaged out but in my experience it's the boses arsewipes who get the pick of the jobs and these are usualy the juniors as they will do anything and will work o/t.

Yes this is a way I think managers will see as way of reducing hours. Put brown noses on so called 3.5 hour duties which actually take about 2 if you use a car and run round. The when flexibility comes in the managers will get their mates on the easy rounds to cover the cut offs - good luck to them I have stopped rushing and will never ever do it again.

Anyone who thinks seniority is unfair obviously wouldn't have a problem with me turning up at the front of a que at the last moment and walking straight past you all i assume. Or as i suspect would you turn around and say" oi mate i was here first".

Just a thought- but how many other businesses or workplaces do you know that designates jobs in the workplace based upon how long someone has worked there?

Seniority still applies and your rep should ensure that RM continue to apply seniority in duty selection.
Only where a test or skill is required might a junior overide a senior who does not have the skill or has not passed the test.
Where RM do njot apply seniority you should have your rep record a disagreement or submit an individual grievance.

Yes, but earlier in their career, there wasn't as much s**t as now. I've said before, the best walks now would be at least twice as bad as the worst walks twenty years ago. By the way, I completely agree with seniority.

seniority is the only fair way for me! if there was no seniority the management could "get rid" of the older people by putting them on one of the "equally balanced 3.5 hr "ballbreaker" walks! we've all got them at all offices!!!!
