Van share pointless

If the new proposals go through for shoe sized parcels to be taken away and given to LAT offices to deliver as a parcel duty (and can I just add, I actually think it’ll be even a size down from that for anyone to even entertain the idea of extra walk absorption to offset the parcels being taken) then why the need for van share? I think invest the money in bikes and build a couple of in house parcels duties to mop up and do drop boxes etc like the old way.

You have to remember theres a lot of h&s since the bike days, with much lower maximum bag weights. Probably would cause havoc with trying to do things the old way.

This sidesteps the reality that hardly anyone ever used bikes and some units have been moved to industrial estates where using bikes would now be complete madness.

Our office has seen more sick leave from pushing trolleys and excessive walking than it ever saw when We rode bikes.

Since I decided to put less in the bag each time and just fill it up more often, it's done wonders for my knee, and probably ankles. Made a big difference. It was all those periodical magazines.

Don't really have hills so can't comment on trolley issues.

Yes I'm convinced if this proposal did go through it's just an excuse to get rid of one duty in every 6, making all walks 20% bigger... then at some point in the future the bigger parcels will just gradually find their way back on to normal deliveries anyway.

Today is the now infamous Capitals Day announcement day for RM so we will have more of an idea where they are going later today. The parcels idea seems to much like the delivery methods trials in that it doesn't sound possible to do. If RM 'push the envelope' though it is almost certainly going to result in a general strike ballot which will almost certainly go through.
RM really is in a right mess now sadly and I honestly don't see a way out.

Exactly. They just come up with ludicrous ideas as an excuse to give us more work.

Despite trolley deliveries taking longer, despite a passenger sitting in the passenger seat of a van share, doing nothing, they managed to increase duty sizes when they introduced van share.

Then they gave us PDA's and told to scan virtually every parcel and large letter, then they had us emptying postboxes, then they had us starting later and working when the roads are at their busiest, then they tell
us none of these things add time to the duty, but mail is down so here's some more streets.

Taking away shoebox size packets from my rural duty will make no difference whatsoever. I already go over almost every single day, so no way can my duty have anything added.

The size of the package is rather irrelevant (thats what she said) what takes time are attendance calls for ANY item, and then they want us to deliver these items to neighbours ? This is where a lot of time is lost, waiting at doors for signed fors and smallish parcels but which wont go through a letterbox.

some ideas

Get rid of signed for tracked letters, just have them tracked with postie scanning at door as usual - instant time saving.
Get rid of the need for a signature for recorded letters and parcels (lets face it, its always unrecognisable scribbles anyway) just have postie scan at doorstep and hand over item.
Open up the Tracked service to the general public. Also promote this service, it gives customer piece of mind that the item is tracked to the doorstep, they can charge more than a regular letter/ parcel for it, could be win-win for customers, business and posties alike. Would be a good replacement for the current recorded system for letters especially.
For items of higher value items that MUST have a signature, increase the price of the current recorded postage (with insurance of say up to £100) as an intermediate between this and Special Delivery.

And despite all of that, virtually every postie in my DO was back about an hour early today.

What's wrong with giving us more work? Keeps you in a job. If you want the overtime do it, if not, cut off.

I don't know what people worry about, you only need work to your finishing time, nobody can make you do more if you don't want to.

The worry is if they introduce performance standards.
If they decide you haven't done sufficient work in your contracted hours.
The computer says you should have completed, why haven't you?
