A new trial is underway exploring how barcoded P739 cards can help colleagues and customers keep track of posted items.

We’re delivering more parcels than ever. Customers expect us to deliver items fast and first time. And increasingly, they want to know where their items are – that calls for accurate scanning and sorting.

At Kingston-upon-Thames and Surbiton delivery office in London, colleagues are using PDAs and the new barcoded P739 forms. The cards have a unique barcode on them, which helps the team manage items through the customer service point.

Postwoman, Jaydey Goldsmith, said: ‘When you can’t get rid of a parcel, obviously you always have to write a P739. But with these ones, you complete the card, scan the barcode on the card and then scan it on the parcel. When you press “book-in” it books it back into your office.’

Postman, Steve Cardy, said: ‘The cards benefits us because when items go into the office they get scanned and put onto a frame. When the customer comes, we know exactly where those parcels are.’

The trial came about after postman, Michael Braamhaar, wrote a letter to Courier, calling for a new type of P739 card with a pre-printed barcode. He said: ‘Hopefully I can contribute to developing it and seeing if it’ll be helpful to postmen and women across the nation.’

Err no what really happened was RM noticed that DPD have been using this method for a while now, imitate not innovate it's RM's motto !

Yes ,your cynicism is well founded ,however you forget the mantra " more indoor work,less outdoor work".

Yeah but this happens outside on the punters doorstep yes? so the mantra is 'less indoor work (for a few), more outdoor work (for the many) no more time to do it in and no more money either'

Ohh deary me.
Did the indoor staff get any more money for implementing the computer system in the callers office?
Or for the time it takes to now book all those items into stock?
Or for now accepting customer parcels and returns and processing them?

do the indoor rle staff get a delivery supplement ?
do the indoor rle staff do longs and shorts start and finish times ?
do the indoor rle staff do all year lapsing ?
well by looking at this the outdoor posties are doing the booking in by scanning the item on delivery that the item is back at the office . or please tell me if im wrong .

It wasn't meant as a dig at the customer collections counter staff of whom I am one on occasion. Besides, the number of staff doubled when we started booking parcels back in so I'll leave it up to you to decide if there was a net gain or loss of work for the cc crew.

That sounds like a managers mantra!! If anything Royal Mail are constantly trying to find ways to give us posties less indoor work and more outdoor work.

How very dare you ! Managers mantra indeed! I'd rather do outdoor work than indoor work anyday, if I'm late back , then what,have they given us time to do this ,like they gave us time to try half the street ,if the intended recipient isn't in? No, thought not.

It won't work everywhere.
The trouble with Royal fail and the people who come out with these amazing ideas is that it might work in a small office but is pretty much going to be a disaster in larger offices, it's probably been dreamt up by the same arsehole who thought that One Plan was a good idea.
