These vehicles appear to be replacing our present 15 York ones. Once approved by H&S and training etc. My question is I'm sure a trial was carried out on said vehicles a few years ago in either Plymouth or Truro, can anybody shed any light on this and if so we're there any major issues to be addressed.

We were driving a few of these at GLASGOW mail centre in the mid 90s, early 00s. The Leyland dafs didn't but the Ford cargo 7.5 tonners had that capacity. No problems apart from a bit longer but apart from that nothing. It does make sence. RM 7.5 drivers are VERY WELL paid compared to most other companies and that's not including NDA/NIGHT ALLOWANCE or docket. I think the basic for a full-time is £518 per week. That's probably why RM are using agency drivers as they just pay them for a couple of the hours worked, and the TO AS INSTRUCTED, on the 318 for permanent staff means playing pool of drinking tea, mostly. That's because RM management are incapable of making up rotas that use time efficiently, even with all their computer help. I've still got a few mates in the job and although their doing about 3 times the work that we used to do , they know that it's still a good nuber. Bringing in more capacity 7.5 tonners may actually save full-time jobs, because it they switched over to 17tonners, most 7.5 tonne drivers would need to relocate to another job/evr as RM would just use agency staff. That's the way all mail centres/rdcs are going. So anything that can be put in the way of that and show that a RM driver is doing more work can surely only be a good thing. That's my thoughts anyway.

Long term RM is going to switch to 17.5t lorries anyway. With the increase in parcels, more space is needed. You'll sometimes get large parcels that'll take up most of a york on their own.
I'm surprised that RM have never looked at having them always driving when not on official tea/lunch breaks or mandatory rest breaks (when they could be segging mail, collecting up mail for their runs, etc. AT one time you'd have every driver going round every section in processing collecting up every available bit of work for their runs

And if your office cannot get a 17.5 tonner in the loading area?SpacePhoenix wrote:Long term RM is going to switch to 17.5t lorries anyway. With the increase in parcels, more space is needed. You'll sometimes get large parcels that'll take up most of a york on their own.

Then you can probably expect your DO to either be merged into another DO that can or move to a new buildgreengiant wrote:And if your office cannot get a 17.5 tonner in the loading area?SpacePhoenix wrote:Long term RM is going to switch to 17.5t lorries anyway. Thank you for your comments green giant you're right, being a 17.5t driver we are very limited in D.Os we can actually visit due to size, 26 York's is also our capacity, weight obviously no problem. Unlike the 21york vehicles.
