well the population is predicted to keep rising until the 2050s, and people can't get enough of internet shopping so I assume the business will adapt - we're no longer going around on bikes with satchels but somehow RM is still here.

If we can get out of the EU then we should be able to drop the DSA and the GDPR. This would have an immediate positive effect to the business. I suspect the MPs will get their way though and we will return to/not leave the EU.
In which case the race to the bottom will continue and the job will radically change. A lot of the current workforce will just leave or get redundency where possible and RM will start to resemble the competitors where most of the employees are EU migrants. In short the future is likely not very rosy.

As I understand it, the union's biggest gripe about EU membership is the insistence on competition even when it's demonstrably unhelpful/inefficient. The fact 7 men in vans working for 7 companies (or themselves) deliver on my walk - more than half of them on nonsense money and nonsense hours, isn't to do with the Tories, it's an EU Directive.

Ours isn't the only industry Brussels does this to.

We can just about cope with the parcels / packets we get now let alone the rest of the market. I think putting the worms back in the can if/ when we leave is unlikely.

I'm an eternal optimist and the future in our business seems to be parcels and packets bought online. I don't think Brexit will have that much of an impact on our business because if heavy tariffs get put on imported goods coming into our country from the EU, then our customers will just buy elsewhere, whether that be from the UK itself or from countries in the Far East where goods are being made cheaper. The biggest threat to our industry comes from the competition who are not regulated like we are and the fact that most of them employ EU migrants (because we are in the EU) and pay them peanuts as well.
