2D Barcodes

Hi all,

interesting reading on Royal Mails 'game changing parcel strategy',...................... wonder what the unions view will be on this proposal?

Anyway getting on to the main point of 2D bacode scanning, we have been scanning the 2d barcodes also known as horizon barcodes in the mail centre both inward and outward and we also have to scan at the delivery point when delivering the items.

I am trying to understand why we have to scan them at mail centre and at delivery as they have no tracking capability for the customer or the company, we are neither able to use this for tracking through Royal mails different sites or use them as proof of delivery........

What is the point of all this pointless scanning that goes on?

like I say understand scanning for tracked items as well as SD as it provides customer insight as to the progress of item through the network, but 2d scanning has no such capability for the customer?

We only scan Tracked and SDs on the inward

The 2D barcodes contain a lot more data than the standard barcodes. I'm not entirely sure who gets to access this data and how it is used though.

My gut feeling is that in the long term RM want all packets to have 2D barcodes on them. With the address being encoded as part of the barcode in theory you could get a count of the number of packets for each walk. If RM went eventually to having letters and large letters delivered say every 2 days and most walks went to being packets only then in theory the recipients could see approx when they item will be delivered

Mainly eBay items and small companies use the 2D barcodes so when the item gets delivered the barcode updates the status of there item on there account. So the customer can’t complain they haven’t received there item

With 2d barcodes having the address details, this enables machine reading a lot quicker and more accurate.

It also means with the new parcel strategy that an item intended for the new LAT service can be sorted to the LAT hub rather than the DO.

Any LAT items that come in early enough should get sent out on the normal runs to DOs. We've got no way of knowing if an item is a LAT item or normal Tracked as they're not marked up as LAT items
