Sickness

Post by Bedfordbomber »

Hi, I rang in sick Last Saturday morning. I received a phone call from my manager this morning asking me why I wasn’t in work today. I told him I didn’t have to contact him till I was ready to go back to work which will be tomorrow. He told me you have to ring in every morning when you are off sick. I assumed you didn’t to contact management until 4 days after sickness. Can you please tell me the proper procedure about sickness please. I would ask my union rep but he is on holiday.

Employment Policies At- A- Glance
Attendance.
Sickness
• We understand there may be times when you’re unable to come to work because you’re ill.
• If you’re unable to come to work you need to speak to your manager (or their deputy if they’re unavailable) or go through the agreed process for your unit, as soon as possible. You should ideally speak to them before you’re due to be in work.
• When you come back to work, during your welcome back meeting, you should complete an absence declaration form (available from your manager), for the first seven days of absence. A fit note should have been provided for absences longer than this.
• A record of your absence will be kept on PSP.
• Absences relating to pregnancy will be discounted. Accidents at work or disability will normally be discounted when deciding if your attendance levels meet with required standards.

Introducing the new Attendance Agreement

Notifying absence and maintaining contact
• Employees will advise of their absence before the commencement of the shift in accordance with the arrangements set out for their office
• Discussion will cover the reason for absence, likely duration and anticipated return date and any support which Royal Mail may be able to offer
• The employee and manager should seek to agree an appropriate time and date for reviewing together all but very short absences
• Employees need to provide a self certificate for the first 7 days of absence and a medical certificate for any absence over 7 days
• The aim of maintaining contact during an absence is to encourage an early return to work wherever possible
• In the rare event that contact is not maintained following the expiry of a ‘Fit Note’, the manager should make reasonable efforts to make contact including sending contact letters by Special Delivery and First Class post. If the employee does not make contact, he or she will be given two days’ written notice before any suspension of sick pay.

So ask your manager to indicate where it states, in the attendance policy, that you have to phone in every day.

I think it's good to keep in contact whether you ring or just even a text saying your not 100% yet especially if you are short term ill. I guess the doctors note will cover you for longer periods of absence.
