Managers prepping and delivering

Post by Jpro747 »

We constantly have managers doing IPS, prepping the rounds to be lapsed and sometimes delivering entire rounds that would otherwise fail because we haven’t got the man hours.

We have Full Time vacancies which part timers keep applying for but their contract hours increase gets rejected by area manager.

What’s the best way to challenge this? We have no rep in our office.

whole office has to:
not start early,
work your hours,
take your breaks,
don't work day's off,
do no overtime at all,

worked in my old office, ( 4 PT made upto FT + 6 new PT posties )

IF you ALL stand together, things happen, if not it will just carry on

Yeh, it’s so easy and true!
Pity there are too many that do not realise that simple message.
Strangely the people who would benefit most in being made up to full time - the part timers - are the worst offenders!
Stupidity, and no ability to listen to sound advice.
On the topic of managers doing OPG work, this has gone on unaddressed for years.
The CWU should have had this problem thrashed out long ago, it impacts on their members financially and costs jobs.
Why do they not confront RM nationally - at the very negotiating stage annually! As over the country it has a huge effect on possible job numbers lost to people who RM allow to sort mail etc. It is NOT their job or in their contract I suspect.
Maybe push for THEM to be “ conducted” for un authorised action at work ??

Given that they have been told there would be a review of p/t hours every six months, why would anyone seriously believe that not working the hours will lead to an increase in contracted hours? That is counter intuitive.
And for who?
What benefit is there for someone with little or no seniority to give up wages to benefit someone else?
And you call them stupid? Some f***ing rep you are.

Sound advice?
When is the issue of part time holiday pay going to get addressed?

They don't listen to "sound advice" mainly because it is shite advice.
Maybe all these full timers who are full of sound advice for p/t staff should give up their full time contracts and put their money where their mouth is.
No thought not.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

This is the real issue, this is what’s stopping people being made up to full time. Nothing to do with people not working to rule. Why pay someone 38 hours when they’re on holiday when you can get away with paying them 25? That’s £156.65 per week saved on the office budget per person, and that’s not including pension & NI contributions. This is the issue that the CWU really needs to address but won’t.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Working to rule is never gonna happen in my office, too many I’m alright Jacks and spineless colleagues. In an office of about 25 there are only 4 of us who do all of the above. The PTers who want to be made up fail on all of them.

Wind your neck in ! Clever cropping of PART of the post to enhance your inflated opinion of my comment, so I will respond in another attempt to explain my reasoning. Part Timers are their own worst enemies and that is a simple fact. The post I responded too was about more full time job opportunity “if” people worked their time and done the job properly maybe those poor part timers would then get a chance of full time employment, far too many posties give up their own time for NO recompense. This knock on effect reduces their need to employ more staff.
The part timers I am talking about are NOT being paid for going in early etc! It is not about making up dosh to supplement income when they are not being paid is it ? That’s the sound advice given but never taken, so they are stupid when they do not listen ?? They are VERY often naive! and fearful of not surviving the trial periods.
No, they also feel and do get pressurised by many FT partners to get them out the door quicker, and the DOMs just love um.
They may think that being “ the good guy” will get him full time work, but it doesn’t. Many leave and it only starts again.
The averaged hours never came to fruition, holiday pay never adjusted because they done it voluntarily! NEVER asked!
I was a part timer and the ONLY one in the office to start/finish on time because I did not need the sound advice they were ignoring. And for the record, windbag !! I am not a Rep sooooo wrong on that one too matey, a right old soldier you are.
I am not stupid enough to expect ANY full timer to take any interest in any part timers concerns - and for that matter Unit Reps or the CWU hierarchy. NO part timers have been made up for YEARS, contracted hours have never been increased.
I accept many young posties need more money, but I also know the hurdles they need to overcome to get any due payments!
I think I am more up about the strife associated with PT staff, much more than you do and KNOW the true reality of their situation.
That apart, they DO not listen to others advice and get shafted routinely, and nobody gives a s**t!!! So aye, they are dopey.

What you have described is my experience exactly. Hope “ Clash” reads your response. The job is being ruined by our own workmates, many old soldiers with loads o seniority and that combined with managers let loose to B&H and intimidate at will is just the cream on the cookie.

Fair point!
But, some backing from colleagues and interest from the CWU would go a long way to help downtrodden colleagues.
It is sadly a selfish- man mind thyself- attitude that has overtaken society I suppose!
Thatchers children in action, nobody any longer interested in the poor treatment of others, a pity but a sign of the modern times I suppose. No compassion anymore, it’s survival of the fittest - like the old soldiers with “loads o seniority”, they really are all right Jack.

Take another read at the full post, and not a cropped section to allow a blowhard to mouth off, then reconsider your adoration of Clash, at my expense. Telling people not to work for nowt is hardly shite advice and in the long term RM would not have a ready made excuse NOT to give those PT staff FT contracts.
By the way I did put my money where my mouth was! I dropped to part time work on the belief that a part timer would be made up with many young men waiting on FT, hey presto! it never transpired. Too many others prepared to pick up the slack for NO financial benefit. Sound advice falling on deaf ears is a sign of stupidity to me but I am sure you and Clash do not need any, so I will take a f***ing bow to your superior knowledge and blind loyalty to Clash’s opinion. :Applause

I did read the whole post.
The original post states that the whole office has to do ABC and D.
You then weighed in with the p/t staff are stupid and won't listen to advice.

How exactly will a p/t member of staff see an improvement in their contracted hours by refusing to work their day off?

I’m properly fed up with our office at the moment, there are loads of all right jacks on piss easy walks, start early, no break go home early and we are now on permanent double lapsing for the foreseeable.

The union is useless, the rep is in the pocket of the DOM and is spineless in regards a walk out. The majority of blokes are fed up being bullied and hassled, managers in the job less than 6-8 months who don’t know the job, managers doing walks and etc

How exactly will a p/t member of staff see an improvement in their contracted hours by refusing to work their day off?
Firstly any part timer is entitled to work their day off to supplement their income, but, that also exposes a problem that is not being addressed! There is a staffing problem, is it to cover sickness or unfilled vacancies.??
In my experience they are mainly offered the opportunity to cover FT duties and only paid the hours worked- not the full time duty hours- and they would still go in early, miss breaks etc to finish along with a FT partner who gets paid full duty time regardless of finishing an hour early. That is unfair on them if not being stupid. They fall into a trap and the promised increase in PT hours does not materialise under the " you volunteered" to do it! Again I will repeat, they give up their own time to accommodate FT partners to avoid the hassle of holding them back. Anyway, the opportunity to work any day off is rare for them. The old soldier, long seniority Rural duty holders are asked to work their days off consistently, while the floater gets bumped onto another duty - as the old soldier will only cover his own duty. It is a last resort for any PT person to get offered working their day off. They very seldom get a Saturday / Monday off etc. So although I know it is financially hard being PT with no proper backing they get shafted and still go in up to an hour early unpaid, and in my opinion that is let's say "foolish" not to listen to sound advice, they allow themselves to be intimidated, therefore exploited.
I regret the term stupid to describe them, but the unscrupulous managers we have do use and abuse them and our senior colleagues are no better in reality. They are happy to witness and allow PT staff to suffer the indignity and intimidation they suffer. I fully understand a young postie trying to support a family struggles on a 24 hour contract and I hate to see the horrible attitude/ treatment the have to endure. If their actions and many FT posies as well, did not dig a DO out of the s**t and allow a DOM to scrimp on a budget at their expense and allow them NOT to recruit sufficient staff to cover an office my advice would be different.
