P/T contracts

Post by MinTee »

So I’ve been working FT since I started on a PT contract. I’ve accepted that there’s seniority and the people above me have since been made up. It’s now me and another fella in line for it, but last April and October the review was just swept under the carpet and ignored.

April is fast approaching and the DOM has just accepted 2 FT transfers from another office and didn’t even consult the rep.
Looking less likely I’ll be made up, and still absolutely shafted when it comes to wanting a well earned week off.

Anyone had any luck getting this issue addressed themselves?

Put in a greivance. If you can prove that you have consistently worked over your contracted hours for a period of time (normally 12+ weeks) then there is an agreement in place with the union which means your DOM has to make your hours up to what you have been working.

We have had several people in our office do the same, and I am about to do so as well

Can you provide a link to this agreement?

I think there’s something in the four pillars agreement that we agreed to last year about reviewing part time staffs contracts twice a year, is it March and September or something like that. It doesn’t automatically mean though if u have been working full hours u will be put up. That’s what we were told Anyway. I think in our office at least 20 staff were looking upgraded and had been doing the hours but our rep cud only get 5 put up and even that was a battle.

The 'review' practice should not be allowed to happen because full time contracts need to be given out to the most senior part timer first. It contradicts the already existing agreement.

Doesnt matter if the most senior part timer doesnt do overtime or work his day off

Seniority is the only fair way as what if the manager gives out overtime to the same people all the time with less seniority? What if the most senior part timers are floaters who dont get asked to work their day off? What if senior part timers dont do overtime on principal because they know they should have a contract if needed to do it so they get sick and holiday pay.

The union never thought that shtick through and thats why its rarely followed through on

If a part timer with less seniority than me got offered a full time contract before me, I for one would be putting in a grievance - doesnt matter how many hours more than me they have done.
If you tolerate this, then your paid break will be next

That’s what happened in our office mate, was based on seniority. Annoyed the guys who did a lot more hours than anyone else and still didn’t get upgraded but as u say seniority only fair way to do it.

We have FT vacancies in the office which PT staff have applied for, but their applications keep getting rejected by the sector manager.

We have had someone transfer to our office with 2 years seniority and given a full time contract when there are people with 11 years who are waiting to be made up. It takes the piss

FOUR PILLARS OF SECURITY AND PAY NATIONAL AGREEMENT

8. Resourcing in line with current agreements (EDITED points)

Both parties will re-affirm they will deploy legally binding commitments to part- time workers and the
use of agency workers.

In respect of part-time worker the following will apply with immediate effect.

It is apparent that while some colleagues have secured additional conditioned hours and also converted
to full- time there is more that can be done to reflect a part-time workers commitment to additional
hours (should they wish it.) This means, in line with our agreements, and where justified, we should
focus on moving to full time or increasing contractual hours, below full-time, either on a temporary or
permanent variation of contract.

....Agreed that their is not and will not be a central HR policy to only recruit on a part-time basis.Recruitment determined by workload and the outcome of the weekly resource meetings, initiated 13 weeks out.
Notwithstanding our immediate activity we will develop a means to confirm that effective weekly
resourcing meetings are taking place. This will include 6 monthly reviews to of part-time employees
and regular use of agency workers to ensure use of this resource is being used in line with our
agreement.
