l'm struggling to understand just what's on offer here ??? Is this a new "premium service" (collect and deliver same day ?) No mention of pay rates or how much mileage will be involved... and I guess ultimately it will impinge on our workload as posties ? Has the CWU "okayed" this ?

I thought the CWU had an agreement that there wouldn't be any self-employed people working for RM? The other courier companies pay 70 pence per parcel delivered but it sounds like RM want to take 60 pence for each parcel delivered instead! I don't see many people wanting to take this new job on.

In the old days we used to call it Datapost.
It's a business to business courier service, mostly legal documents, mostly on motorbikes, mostly in London.
We've been doing it for years.

Are they looking to expand it for same day business to customer tracked parcels?
Probably....

It's not new, I noticed an add online somewhere for Royal Mail same day. I thought to myself: 'How the f**k do they do that then?' I guess this answers it. I also got a quote out of interest

I can't remember off the top of my head what it was, but it was some insane amount of money for a smallish parcel.

It's the way it's going. You can get a bottle of whiskey or a case of beer dropped to your home at any time of day or night via Amazon nowadays, have been able to for a long time. Makes you think of the poor sole that must be hanging around somewhere waiting for you to make an order for this stuff!

Same day services was not included in the legal protection agreement the Agenda for Growth Agreement. They are a subsidiary company to Royal Mail and they have a lot of self employed couriers working for them.

Any idea what percentage the driver gets. A pallet of up to 400k costs £120 from Croydon to London.
Would quite fancy a few days a week when I retire after thirty five years on the streets.

The same day industry is massive but RM are a small player really. You're better looking at Courier Exchange if you want a bit of work or seeing if you can nab a customer locally to work direct with.

Rates for small vans carrying anything from a letter to a 400kg pallet are around £1 per mile for the customer with 55-75p per mile going to the driver (£25 minimum charge) depending on the size of the job and how desperate they are. RM pay less than most companies from what I hear, think they push to pay under 60p a mile, they also charge more than most companies. London rates are a different ball game and a law unto themselves, drivers there tend to think in hours rather than miles when quoting jobs.

Problem with doing it for a few extra quid is that courier insurance will cost you maybe £1.5k per year (although you can usually negotiate if your not going to be doing much work) then you have public liability, Goods in Transit insurance, fuel, van maintenance, accountant fees on top. Your first £150 profit a month will get eaten up in expenses.
