Signing for a duty / seniority and protocol
If a walk comes up where the office is invited to sign for (I know it goes on seniority), but what should happen if, after the closing date, someone withdraws their application (and who was the likeliest to get the walk), shouldn't it be given to the next person in seniority? Or should the walk be advertised again? Does anyone know the official line on this?

We do it on the next in line on seniority who actually applied. Unless tere was a problem with the original process.

Thanks for the link, but can't see anywhere that answers my question of when someone withdraws their application and what happens then...ninja wrote:It's part of the wayforward agreement.

Whoever's the highest seniority that actually applied will get it, presumably the higher seniority part timers didn't fancy the crap duty, just bear in mind it could be worth taking an initial hit on a bad round as in the future you might find that when a full timer on a decent duty leaves then if costs are being cut they may only offer the duty to existing full timers instead of making someone up to full time, on the other hand they might just reduce the better duty to part time in which case you could be stuck on a bad one for ever, who knows !al64 wrote:what happens if a part timer wants to sign for a full time duty and they are the only ones that want it but there are part timers with a lot more seniority tha t are waiting to be made full time?

The agreement states that once assigned you are unable to come off it for 12 months.Lilly J wrote:Thanks for the link, but can't see anywhere that answers my question of when someone withdraws their application and what happens then...ninja wrote:It's part of the wayforward agreement.

So nobody can withdraw once they have been signed on the duty.

My point was that no-one had been assigned it, someone withdrew their application before closing date, but the walk wasn't passed to the next person who applied - it was advertised againninja wrote:The agreement states that once assigned you are unable to come off it for 12 months.Lilly J wrote:Thanks for the link, but can't see anywhere that answers my question of when someone withdraws their application and what happens then...ninja wrote:It's part of the wayforward agreement.

So why didn't the 2nd guy apply a second time? the answer is important because it puts everything in context.Lilly J wrote:My point was that no-one had been assigned it, someone withdrew their application before the closing date, but the walk wasn't passed to the next person who applied - it was advertised againninja wrote:The agreement states that once assigned you are unable to come off it for 12 months.Lilly J wrote:Thanks for the link, but can't see anywhere that answers my question of when someone withdraws their application and what happens then...ninja wrote:It's part of the wayforward agreement.

If he wasn't made aware in a reasonable manner then he MAY have a case for grievance.
Ideally, the position should have been offered to the next most senior during the first application round, but without local knowledge of why it was readvertised, why the senior postie withdrew, and why the 2nd senior postie didn't apply (or wasn't told), there are just too many variables to give a specific answer. For the same reasons that's probably why the scenario is not addressed in the agreement - too many variables to cover all the bases.
