Mon-fri rumour

Is there any weight to this rumour of a mon-fri working week for posties? I know it’s been knocking about for years... am I right in saying parcel force is mon-fri? I never see one on a Saturday. When’s this “announcement” taking place from Rico Black? Mon-fri would cut out the need for floaters, which would result in major job losses... who stays & who goes?

Doubt it. Wouldn't it require us to ditch the uso? If that happens then they'll be serious job losses and it'll no longer be a postal service as unprofitable routes such as rurals will almost certainly be scrapped.

Isn't the USO obligation locked in until 2020/2021? As in OFCOM aren't reviewing it again till then.

The USO is 6 days a week. They can't just unilaterally change the terms, they'd need to make the case to OFCOM, who would need to sign off on it.

I think the Mon-Fri idea that's floated all the time is pie in the sky stuff. People want mail delivered (especially parcels) on a Saturday, we'd be committing commercial suicide if we dropped that.

If you want to get rid of floaters, Tuesday is the day off that makes sense from a business perspective. I don't think that would go down quite as well with FT staff

No they wouldn’t , Tuesday is a normal working day for firms and schools etc, Saturday isn’t .

doesn't make the slightest bit of difference to a company that is cutting costs. they've been discussing delivering mail on mon wed and fri, one week, then tues thurs, and sat, the next. that wouldn't worry them in the slightest.

its only BECAUSE of the USO that they deliver 6 days a week.

The USO wouldn't need to be scrapped entirely just amended, we could still be obligated to deliver to every address, but just over 5 days rather than 6.

Cutting any day would have serious financial implications for people like me; it's a slippery slope after that too. What comes next? I'd expect to be balated by the union and I for one would be voting to strike!

I don't think it would have as big an impact on jobs as many think. Take any week with a BH when six days work are squeezed into five, it's always manic and people are required to go over their time to clear. The work is still there.

Well, in my office BH weeks are busy, they can be very busy, but there's never any additional overtime given out, people just absorb the extra workload.

The argument for changing the USO and dropping delivery days, is that there isn't enough workload there to make it sustainable. To change the USO, Royal Mail have to convince Ofcom they can't sustain the service...

They could easily make Sat a premium service for packets like many other couriers do and introduce a Sat Tracked.

Would love a Monday to Friday job instead of the floating days off we have such a high turnaround of staff losing the floaters would not be that big a deal. OT for Saturday packets and collections
